OCD Action calls for universities to support students with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

September 16, 2009

While many university students will give their assignments a final read-through before submitting them, for those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) the fear that their work is not perfect is causing them to miss deadlines, and ultimately even costing them their degree.

OCD is a biological disorder in which people experience repetitive and upsetting thoughts (obsessions) and use rituals (compulsions) to control the anxiety these thoughts produce. It often strikes in late teens and early twenties, just as many young people are about to embark on higher education. The pressure of meeting new people, sharing accommodation and intensive studying can combine to accelerate anxieties and make it impossible for them to continue with their education.
