For most people, professional treatment is the most effective means of dealing with OCD, BDD and Trichotillomania. This usually means working with a psychiatrist or a psychologist.

In addition to professional help, self-help groups, books, leaflets and the internet are useful ways of coping with OCD. The more you know about OCD, the better equipped you will be to deal with it. This page will give you an invaluable list of other website links and resources to help you improve your knowledge of OCD.

British Psychological Society

The British Psychological Society can provide further information about private treatment.

Finding a cognitive behaviour therapist

Cognitive behaviour therapy is the only psychological treatment that is shown scientifically to be of benefit in OCD and BDD. You can find a list of accredited* cognitive behaviour therapists by going to the website of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists, Then On the menu, click on ‘Find a Therapist’. Then select on ‘Location’, ‘Specialty’ and ‘NHS or Private’.

Alternatively, for a copy of the directory, send a cheque for £3, made payable to BABCP, with details of your name and address, to: BABCP, Globe Centre, PO Box 9, Accrington BB5 2GD. Or you can order a directory by telephoning +44 (0) 1254 875277, giving your details, and paying by credit/debit card.

Directories are printed as requested so are completely up to date. Please note that, as the BABCP itself states, other practitioners offering CBT may be registered by other reputable bodies. However, searching for a therapist through the BABCP is one way of getting details of CBT therapists with training in OCD.

* Accreditation means the therapist has demonstrated basic training in CBT.

Self - Help
If the OCD is not severe sufferers can start their own self - help programme. A number of books setting out self - help programmes are available from our OCD Shop. (Examples are 'Understanding obsessions and compulsions: A self - help manual' by Frank Tallis and 'Living with Fear' by Isaac Marks).

It is important to set aside time to follow a programme and to follow a programme consistently. The family can help by providing encouragement for the sufferer and praise when changes are achieved.

If the problem is more severe or complicated, the sufferer will benefit from seeking professional help. The GP may make a referral to a specialist for behaviour therapy.

Support groups
Support groups can potentially be a useful part of treatment. These groups provide a forum for mutual acceptance, understanding and setting of goals. People new to OCD can talk to others who have learned successful strategies for coping with the illness. It is important to remember, however, that support groups are not suitable for everyone.

Your road to recovery could be helped by following some basic lifestyle guides.

Relaxation, physical exercise, regular sleep patterns and eating a balanced diet are all important factors in not only a healthy lifestyle but also in ensuring you have a better chance of recovering from OCD.
