  1. Hi, my son is 17yrs of age and last august was diagnosed with ocd (bad thought) after spending time in a secure hospital, he is making unbelieveable recovery with help from a pyschiatrist (who is fantastic) and prozac 60mg. However, his pyschologist in our opinion really does not understand ocd... my son eventually 'opened up' on his second visit to him and told him he felt guilty about things he'd done at an early age (experimenting with other kids the same age as alot of youngsters do) anyway after a visit yesterday his psychologist said he seemed alot better and did he now know the boundries about what he had done when he was younger!!!! i really could not beleive it!!! he also asked me in earlier months was my son sexually immature i really dont think he understands the guilt/ocd. what should we do should i contact my doctor and ask to see someone else?????

  2. Dear OCD_mum,

In my view (and remember it is just my view) the relationship and understanding between the sufferer and the psychologist working on the cbt and other therapies is critical. I was fortunate to have an excellent Clinical Psychologist who knew what she was talking about and was very good at pacing my recovery. I have very different OCD from your son, but I doubt I could have shocked her and would have been willing to talk to her about it.

All the books seem to say that if you don't gel with your therapist then you should look to get another one.

    I hope this helps

  4. Hi OCD Mum,

I'm sorry to hear that things aren't going well between your son's psychologist and him. I am extremely lucky to have a wonderful psychologist who is very understanding and we work well together.

If I wasn't happy with mine, I would not hesitate to ask to see someone else. Having said that though, I think it can take a few sessions or more to build up a good relationship and understanding between your psychologist and patient.

Maybe your son should talk through how he feels, and depending on how he is understood, you could then take the decision to see someone else.

    Hope this helps

    Bridget

  6. Absolutely request a change, sometimes you just don't hit it off with someone. I was given supposedly best cpn for ocd in the area 5 yrs ago and couldn't stand the woman so I changed. Good Luck
