Haribo are a brand but they make a lot of fruit flavoured sweets too. We also have Nestle, Terry's and Lindt, but in my opinion the all time best chocolate has got to be Cadbury (who have just been bought out by American company Kraft foods).

Poor Cadbury. A British institution...lost.
Mind you, I don't even really eat Cadbury chocolate much, I prefer the darker stuff with 70% cocoa.
Less fat and more anti-oxidants and stuff- it's supposed to be actually good for your heart!
Have you tried 'Hotel Chocolat' chocolate? It's expensive but soooo lovely!
I just love chocolate and am a real chocoholic, but I've given it up for lent so haven't had any for a few weeks....
Yes poor Cadbury
it'll go the same way as the firms that were taken over by Nestle, they'll change the recipes and we'll lose some excellent bars such as Whispa, CDM, Fruit and Nut, Twirl and Bourneville to name a few
And how will we manage without Roses?
Richard Digence did a long song about the sweets from our childhood at a cabaret when we took a group on a group holiday one year to Butlins. It's weird how the name of sweets can evoke so many childhood memories isn't it?
What sweets remind you of your childhood?
BTW the only things I bought today were mainly OCD related
Hand wash, baby wipes, hand cream, shower gel, tissues, bread and of course food for the cat. Sad isn't it
Of course not Trudy. I really want to know what you bought, no matter how small you think it is. mmmmm! Jacket potatoes. I'd love to try one with Goats cheese. I think it would probably make me extremely fat, though!
Of course! How could I have forgotten Cadbury....most famous here or the 'Cadbury Cream Egg'...:) Made popular by the clucking white rabbit that layed them in the commercials.
I loved em! Too sweet for me now, but a genious idea...Dont they also make the 'Chocolate Orange' ?? So good and so clever.
No Terrys originally made the chocolate orange (I think they were a York firm) until Kraft swallowed them up
Though it's still marketed under the name Terrys.
Both the Chocolate Orange and the Cream Egg are great. I prefer the Chocolate Orange bar as it's easier than trying to break open the 'orange'
Most of our traditional sweet and chocolate manufacturers have been taken over by Kraft or Nestle
What sort of people sit and think up the ideas for new confectionery? Mind you what a fantastic job, though the drawbacks would be obesity and spots
Hi,
Does anyone remember Spangles, Wagon Wheels, Jamboree Bags and Aztec bars?
Any other sweets that you can remember that were taken off the market, especially if they bring back happy memories of childhood?
Thay both actually sound familiar but I cant place them...I heard 'Oreo' was debuing (how do you spell that!?) in England...what do you guys think? It IS America's favorite cookie you know.
And 'milk's favorite cookie'...:)
Yep we've had Oreos here for a while and if you google it you can see the UK advert for them, bit naff but obviously sells the product. Not tried them are they ok?
what does 'naff' mean?
oh, and yes they are soooooo yummy. :)'specially with milk.
The thesaurus says 'naff' means 'lacking fashionable stylishness and appearing boring, tasteless, or unattractive' it can also mean stupid or rubbish in a stupid way. It's one of those words that you know when to use but find it difficult to explain. Perhaps I used the wrong word to describe the advert
It's a bit like the proverbs etc that you are asked to explain in psychology tests, you know what they mean you just find it difficult to put into words - or perhaps that's just me
Help!
I'm hungry just thinking of all those sweets and chocolates
And there's no chocolate in the house
Thanks Trudy-I love a new vocabulary word. I'll have to try and use it in a sentence.
Sounds like you used it right? I've no idea though as thats the first time I've heard it used! lol
Wow spangles were one of my favourites, especially cola flavour. I also remember wagon wheels, though I'm sure they were a lot bigger when I was young or maybe I was just small!!! traffic light lollypops, ice breaker, banjo and texan chocolate bars.
Today I bought a train ticket, bus ticket, paper and sausage roll.
I like oreos
I bought a jacket and Lacoste shoes today.
Oooooh. Freddy...going somewhere exciting?
Nic-Lacoste shoes...not sure what those are, but ANY shoe is a good purchase.
Well kind of trainer shoes - because I bought new shoes a few days ago - keep buying loads of stuff lol
These ones - http://www.lacoste.com/#/catalogue-women-shoes-sport-19spw2635
They have a bow on the front though
Freddy, I used to like things like Cola Cubes, Rhubarb and Custard sweets, Sherbet Fountains. Black Jacks and fruit salads (both four for an old penny!)and does anyone remember Calypos? (think that's how you spell it
)
Sorry Giles we've got a bit off track haven't we?
Trudy,
I remember all of those sweets and jubalees too - fruit flavoured ice in the shape of a triangle!!!! Do you remember the half pence haha?!
Giles - I'm really sorry to have gone off the track but all these sweets remind me of when I was young......
All this talking about sweets is not good when I'm trying to be healthy, lol! But I did eat some Fruit and Nut chocolate tonight, so I can't really talk! I miss when Starburst were Opal Fruits- I swear to God they were nicer, lol!
Today I bought a spicy tuna and bean wrap and a Nutrigrain bar for lunch. Yum, yum!
Oooh, just wanted to say how much I miss Woolies Pick n' Mix! Cinema-going tradition for me, it's not the same getting sweets at the actual cinema because it's so much more expensive.
I used to get the £1 cup at Woolworths and stuff it with as much as I could, haha! Foam bananas, candy mice, fizzy cola bottles, jelly snakes, those circles of chocolate with hundreds and thousands on them...
hahaha...candy mice!??? Seriously? ew!
i dont think i could eat a candy mouse...lol. barely choke down a gummy worm...
Today I bought nothing, but I am going to buy my rounds of bowling in a bit for the bowling league I got suckered into joining. Can you believe I go to a bowling alley every week and bowl with a house ball? lol...its fun, but cant wait till its over in April!
Hey, I don't mind everybody going off track. Talking of sweets, I don't have any, so sadly I cannot offer anybody any. But I can tell you what I bought today. I purchased 'Guitar Method Book 1 - Beginner'.
Oh, and nice buys Nicola. Keep em coming!
Hey does anybody when sweets used to cost a Shilling? No? Good! Lol!
I used to work in an old fashioned sweet shop, It was brilliant, used to sell walking sticks, tobacco, pipes, zippos
Sweets, obviously
Giles,
A shilling - I can remember when Mars, Marathon (Snickers) and Aztec bars cost 6d (two and a half new pence!) virtually out of pocket money range
But in those days an old penny got you a lot in the sweet shop. We had a shop that used to make their own ice lollies for an old penny. The ones made of cola were great if you sucked them they turned white
randomname,
I used to like the tobacco sweet you got in those days
Mama,
Candy and chocolate mice were very popular over here for sweets.
Helz,
Yes I miss pick and mix from Woolies, my first Saturday job was in Woolies on the Pick and Mix.
Freddy,
The Calypos were triangular ice lollies and do you mean the old or the new half penny? We were robbed blind went we went decimal all the prices shot up and the same happened when the new halfpenny went weren't we? Gee that shows our age doesn't it?
BTW I didn't spend my childhood eating sweets - they were a treat that we only got once a week if we were lucky.
Trudy
Hey Everyone
I purchased 2 boxes of chicken selection sushi today. Yum!
I've just got to say, eugh! I cannot bear the thought of people eating sweets. They rot yer teeth! I actually have OCD from time to time where I worry that my teeth are wobbling and are all going to fall out at the same time. I would then be extremely unattractive
Giles
O Giles, only rot yer teeth if you dont brush em!
So I mentioned 'chocolate mice' and 'candy mice' to my friends last night, and we all agreed we could not choke one down. lol. We are picturing some large rat-like gummy/jelly thing that wobbles and squeeks. Its most unappetizing. lol. Perhaps they are cute...like chocolate bunnies for Easter or something? I love this education.
Today I've bought nothing yet, but plan on buying a set if quilting needles...I want to get good at hand quilting...its a dying art.
They only rot your teeth if you eat ridiculous amounts and don't brush your teeth, Giles!
Sweets can be part of a healthy lifestyle. I eat sweets sometimes now and I did more often as a child, but I never went mad and my teeth have always been perfect. I have no fillings whatsoever.
