I guess most of us on here have problems with intrusive thoughts especially the kind where something awful happens perhaps to a family member or someone close.
Recently I've tried something that has helped me and I hope it can help others.
When I've had a thought about something bad happening to someone I've tried to go back a step to see what I was thinking about before. The further back I go the better. This helps me to find out what lead me to the bad thought in the first place. Often it is a simple logical progression where all sorts of possibilities come to mind; for example, if a family member is just popping out to the the shop then you think of the journey an if that involves crossing a road then they could be run down by a car. That gets you thinking about what will happen if they are run down. So what I do is to go back to the previous thought that lead to the bad thought. This very often is quite a long sequence but it is usually quite logical and arrives at the start of the thought process. This then enables me to dismiss the bad thought because I now where it came from and that it was just my mind running loose and exploring all eventualities.
Sounds to easy. Well maybe, but it helps me and I hope it will help others. Dunno why it works, but it does for me, not always but enough to make it worthwhile.
Good luck,
Bingo
