  1. I live in Bodmin Cornwall and my 22 son has OCD and he and his wife live with me. He was disgnosed about a year ago after suffering for a long time until he finally broke down. I would like to start a support group for OCD sufferers in Cornwall and for families who live with it. I find this very difficult and I'm sure a lot of others do, but the nearest support group is in Plymouth which is too far for a lot of people in Cornwall to travel to. Not sure about how to go about setting up a group and could do with some advice. Linda Nichols

  2. Call OCD Action on 020 7253 5272 or e-mail info@ocdaction.org.uk and they will be pleased to give you some advice. You could also contact via private message or e-mail some of the people on the forum who run support groups, two people are Julia_C and Stephen, both can be found either by searching in the members section (click on Members - top right of screen) or perhaps more easily by going to the support groups forum and clicking on PM or e-mail from within one of there postings. Please let me know if I can help.

I wish you well with this. Please do let us know what happens.

  3. Hi Linda

I'm the Stephen referred to in the above post!

I run a number of support groups and I'd be happy to send you some information on how I run the groups, although it's not 'official' information in any way.

As regards existing groups I believe that there is now a group running in Truro - see these pages from Cornwall Rural Community Council's website http://www.cornwallrcc.co.uk/news_ocd_s ... nwall.html http://www.cornwallrcc.co.uk/mental_hea ... roups.html.

I also heard something about a group in Liskeard, possibly with referrals via Rethink's Wadebridge office Telephone: 01208 815676 Email: cornwallservices@rethink.org

I haven't checked either of these but I will follow them both up and post again here!

    All the best

    Stephen

  5. My post above seems to have the link for the Truro group posted wrongly - here it is again:

Hi everyone, especially the Bodmin contingent.
I live half way between Liskeard and Bodmin and we have two OCD groups now up and running in Liskeard. People attend from the Bodmin, Wadebridge, Liskeard, Callington and Saltash areas and I understand there are others from the St Columb area who would like to attend a group.
One of the Liskeard groups is run by Rethink and meets Weds afternoons fortnightly 1.30 - 3.30pm in one of the rooms of the Town Council building in West Street. Attendence is by referral via your GP or Rethink and is open to sufferers only.
I have also started up a more informal group on the other Wednesday afternoons and at present we are meeting in the Hub, the Cafe of the Liskerrett Centre in Varley Lane. So far we have only had three meetings but anyone can come along, sufferers, carers and friends. In the new year I am planning to get it off the ground on a more formal basis by advertising it which I have not yet done. The intention is that it will be a social meeting place for support, company and maybe plan some walks and outings for the better weather. There is a computer suite which we can use free of charge with the optional help of a lovely lady tutor. There are slight problems with the venue because it is not as private as we would like it to be but it is warm and free and we can make our own drinks there. If we get enough people wanting to attend we can talk about booking a private room and paying a small subscription to cover the costs.
We are holding an OCD Action Awareness Day in Liskeard on Wed Feb 10th, after this I will set out a programme of meeting dates.
Rethink also hold a Cafe Chat in Bodmin Sainsburys cafe on Tuesday afternoons.
Please contact me privately via the messaging system and I will let you have all the contact details. Joyce
