    Hi

As well as horrible intrusive thoughts I also have trich (hair pulling) I have just been doing some research on this and have come up with another worry and was wondering if anyone could put my mind at rest.

I read that hair pulling can sometimes be referred to as an Impulse disorder so I googled that and found that another example of an impulse disorder is people not being able to control themselves and cause harm to others (i didn't read it in too much detail so I ddn't scare myself) now after all my telling myself my intrusive thoughts won't come to anything, I'm really worried they will cause I have this hair pulling/impulse disorder!! someone please put me out of my misery!!

  2. Hi Sunshine,

example of an impulse disorder is people not being able to control themselves and cause harm to others

The internet At times a blessing and at other times a curse. Yes trich is considered an Impulse Control disorder (though there is some debate about how to classify it) as is gambling and Kleptomania. You wouldn't worry about people with either of those problems harming others would you? It just means that you have trouble controlling the impulse to pull your hair, it doesn't mean that you're going to harm anyone.

I hope this helps to allay your fears and alleviate your misery.

  3. Hi Hon
Now I dont claim to be any kind of autority on this but I can give you some thoughts and advice on things Ive learned over the years from various experts! I think a major key to whether or not you will act on your thoughts is your awareness of them, and more than this, your awareness that they could cause harm. The people that experts worry about are those that cannot see that some of their negative intrusive thoughts are worrying. There are different types of people when it comes to mental health - neurotic people and psychotic people. Neurotic people think there is something wrong with themselves and often apologise for themseles frequently. Psychotic people think there is soemthing wrong with everyone else and they cannot recognise when they are having a woryying, potentially harnful thought. EVERYONE gets mad, weird, crazy and potentally harmful thoughts - they flit through everyones mind - but its obviously the ocd'ers that fixate on a thought and worry about why theyve had it etc etc. But the fact that they are AWARE of this thought means that they will not be impulsive anough to act on it - you are obviously aware of your thoughts as you recognise it and tell yourslef it will ot come to anything. Just becaue you do one thing does NOT mean you will do another, and certainly not one that wll cause harm. I sometimes think I see 'signs' that things are going to happen - but I am not schitzophrenic (sp!), there are many variations of things in mental health, and just because you have one does not mean you have another xxxx
