  1. Our teenager son has now been diagnosed with OCD. A specialist has recommended Prozac alongside CBT. Our son is keen to start the medication as soon as possible but we are worried about the short term and long term side effects of the drug. Can anyone (parent or OCD sufferer) share their experience about Prozac? Are there any safer alternatives?

  2. Hi, there. I was diagnosed with OCD when I was 16. The doctor originally put me onto a drug called Seroxat. It had a lot of bad press and my own experience of the drug wasn't a good one. I found that it had really bad side effects (including the strangest feeling of dizziness) which would worsen each time my dosage was changed. I had terrible problems trying to come off of that drug too. I've been on and off medication for 11 years now but have been on Prozac for much of that time. I much prefer taking this drug as the only side effect which I have with it is severe constipation (sorry, but you did ask!) but that does go away after a few weeks. I would stress that everyone is different when it comes to medication but I would say that Prozac is probably one of the safer options.

  3. Hi,
I have had ocd since age 10 but was diagnosed age 40 four years ago, i was put on prozac initially i was quite high but this did wear off after a couple of months. But i did find it helpful, initially for first 18months then hd an additional tablet added but last September i came off prozac for another. Speak to your child's consutant, not all medications are licensed for children but sometimes benefitts outway the risks. Also medication can help with cbt,cbt is more likely work for children than if it continues into adulthood.
    Take care
