Hi Andy,
You didn't say whether you meant if you already had the insurance and then went to your GP and now want to consider using your existing BUPA cover or that you have been to your GP and are now considering getting insurance.
I haven't either worked in insurance or had private health insurance for years so I don't know the latest policies. But it used to be that if you took out private health insurance they wouldn't cover pre-existing medical conditions; that is they wont cover you for any conditions that you had prior to taking out the insurance. Some companies used to cover you for certain pre-existing conditions but you had to pay a considerable extra premium.
Perhaps other people might be more up to date with this sort of information.
I hope this helps.

Hi
I was covered through Bupa and got help with my ocd. Your doc has to tell you the name of the psychiatrist he wishes you to see (or you can research this yourself if you wish and do it independently, then tell your doctor to refer you to this person.) You then have to ring Bupa and get a claim number and they have to check that that psychiatrist is Bupa registered. Then ,when you ring your doc ask them to refer you privately and they can them fax a referal letter to the person you wish to see and you then arrange an appointment.
With my insurance, they wouldnt cover me unless my doc thought I had to see a consultant, for any condition, so you have to be assessed by a psychiatrsit first, who will then refer you to the relevant treatment (they also know what Bupa covers etc)
Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks for your responses - I don't have bupa at the moment but was looking to take it out to help me deal with OCD. I'll give them
a call to see if I can still get help with an existing condition - I hope I can!!
