OCD help in the library

  1. Hi all,

I wasn't sure where the best place to post this was, so hopefully this is okay!

I am a librarian working for Surrey library service and it's my job to provide library users with material that promotes health and wellbeing. I have been working on a collection called Read Yourself Well which has self help books for people with OCD, as well as inspiring novels and memoirs. This collection is supposed to support and benefit users, but we are always looking for ways to make this collection better.

I was wondering if anyone here has used any DVD's, CD's, pod casts or computer programs to help with their OCD (or any related problems such as anxiety). Or would anyone want to use these sorts of things if they were available free in the library?

I would love some feedback on this please because we really want to be making the best provision possible for our users.

    Thanks a lot!

  2. Hi scc
I used to work for Devon Library service and I congratulate you on an excellent and much needed project. I do some awareness work down here in Cornwall and OCD Action have always come up trumps with suitable literature. If you click on Resources on the right hand side of the screen you can download a wealth of suitable literature and you will also find a book list.

  3. Thanks Tess,

I will have a good look through the resources list. We already have some great titles to help with OCD using CBT and other techniques, but I really want to try some interactive items. Have you tried anything like that? A DVD or CD for example?

  4. Hi scc
I haven't personally tried anything like that and I think positive feedback from your library users could be helpful to members of this forum and all the other non-members who come online here to learn about OCD.
You say you have already got some great titles and maybe you already have some interactive items in mind. It would be great if you could share the titles with us.
How about having an OCD day or week and setting up a computer alongside your display of resources logged on to this site. As for whether people would use the resources I think it depends on how it is displayed and advertised. Somehow you will need to achieve a balance which removes stigma and brings mental health in line with physical health but allows some privacy for prospective borrowers to browse without drawing too much attention to themselves, because people with OCD are overly sensitive and embarrassed about their problems. Some resources for carers might be well received because OCD does not just affect the sufferer, it affects the entire family and people might like to borrow items to try to help their loved ones as well as learning how to cope with a family member with OCD.
