We are going to be holding an OCD Action Awareness Day as part of OCD Week on Wednesday 10th February. My husband and I have volunteered to organise it. I have contamination OCD and he has lived with it so long he is now very hygiene conscious) so it will be a challenge. So far the venue is booked, it will be held in the Long Room of of the Liskeard Town Council building in West Street, Liskeard. There is a public car park just across the road where an hour's parking costs 20p. I am thinking of providing free tea and biscuits (non-greasy/sticky/chocolatey, but there are lots of nice ones which suit) to attract people in and having people available to answer any questions or discuss issues in confidence.
Our Rethink support group is trying to think of things we can do. We are working on photographic images of OCD and personal stories at present. The psychologist who usually attends our meetings has suggested we challenge people to "take the honey test" which involves having your hands smeared with honey and seeing how long you can last without having to wash your hands. I have not told her but this fills me with dread, the thought of sticky fingers on all the literature and pictures which I am working on and which I would like to keep perhaps for another future event. It has occurred to me that I could get everything laminated but it would cost more. Has anyone any suggestions how to deal with this? I don't mind telling her but don't want to suppress creativity or cause upset. We need all the help and support we can get. There is a student psychologist starting work in December who is going to be assigned to help us - hooray.
Also it would be very helpful to know what OCD Action is able to provide in the way of publicity materials and information for people to take away as I think we will rely heavily on this. Perhaps you could e-mail organisers with photos of what we can obtain from you?
As this is a first time event it might help if we could all share some of our material. I have found useful pictures on the internet by typing in "ocd images" but I would love to hear from other organisers with their ideas and suggestions.
Thankfully I have no fear of the media so I plan to get it advertised (as a free feature) in the newspapers and on Radio Cornwall. Has anyone any idea of how many people might turn up? (I do realise it is not a free JLS concert but I would hope for more than the 30 we have been advised to expect).
I hope this will help other organisers and get some responses.
