  1. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) have issued a clinical guideline on interventions in the treatment of OCD and BDD within the NHS in England and Wales (there are separate arrangements in Scotland).

The guideline shows what can and should be done for sufferers and their families and carers. The guideline will help raise awareness of OCD/BDD to healthcare and other public service professionals and gives a good indication of treatments and other services patients and families and carers can expect from the NHS. If anyone feels that their treatment is not in accordance with the guidline then they may wish to raise the matter with their healthcare professional. Similarly, if anyone feels that their NHS healthcare provider is not providing care in accrodance with the guideline they can write to their MP or any other person or body that can influence provision.

Raising awareness of OCD/BDD is the single most important thing we can do for sufferers, their families and carers.

The guideline can be found on the NICE website http://www.nice.org.uk/CG031 Look under documents - For patients, carers and the public click on Information for the public, or click on Quick reference guide. Both are available by telehone, call 0870 1555 455, quote N0902 for Information the public or N0919 for the Quick reference guide. The full Guideline (350 pages) is also on the same web page.

  2. I get this image of a lot of top, dogs...or lets say docs, sat round a big table.

who has most influance on these guidelines?

Would they consider an ocd sufferer a valuble candidate to put forward their ideas and suggestions?

    The link needs checking BTW

  3. Hi Kirk,

Thanks for pointing out the error in the link, it has been corrected now. It is http://www.nice.org.uk/cg031 and there is also a link from the home page of the OCD Action website.

The Guideline Development Group consisted of some of the top OCD and BDD specialists and researchers in the country. Many of the group were from OCD Action. Also on the group were several sufferers and a carer and where appropriate sufferers with a specific disorder, eg BDD or Hoarding were invited to give their views and experiences. There is a full list of the Group members in the full Guideline, on pages 6 and 7 (available on the NICE website - all 350 pages of it) If you look at the full Guideline see Chapter three, pages 47 to 74 "The Experience of People with OCD and BDD and Their Families and Carers" as this chapter was written by the sufferers and the carer. It also includes some experiences of other sufferers in order to cover the whole OCD spectrum of disorders. Throughout the development great care was taken to ensure that the views of the sufferers were taken into consideration and included. This often resulted in quite considerable changes and significantly influenced the finished guideline.

I believe the Guideline represents the best that can be done for the treatment and management of OCD and BDD at present and the NHS in England and Wales (there are different arrangements for Scotland (blame the politicians for that)) are obliged to provide it.

I am sure NICE would like to hear you views and their conatct details are in the original posting, but if I can help further please let me know via e-mail, PM or a posting.

    Best wishes,
