  1. I'm really struggling just now and can't help but feel overwhelmed by negative feelings. I am so unhappy with everything in my life at the moment and have been doing everything possible to change things for the better for over a year. I just feel like I get kicked down every time that I try to pick myself up. I have fought OCD and depression for 13 yrs now and I did so because I felt that I had something to offer. I am passionate and knowledgeable about what I studied at university but, each time I apply for a decent job, I get turned down. I feel alone and am beginning to feel that the fight has all been for nothing. What's the point?

    Welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry you're feeling so down, it's hard when everything feels like a waste of time. I wish I could say or do more to help, but all I can tell you for now is to not give up. Please. I'm sure you're a wonderful person with so much to offer. When the right job comes around you'll get it and it'll be such a boost. You just have to keep looking, I think it's hard for everyone who's looking for a job at the moment, it's no reflection on you. For now, just try and find something, no matter how small, that is worth living for, and just hold on to it with everything you've got. I try to believe that even the smallest of things is worth sticking around for. Who knows, things could pick up some time soon, and you wouldn't want to miss out.

Hmmm, I can probably talk myself, but there is plenty to live for in life. Your friends, family, hobbies, significant other and all the things we do to make ourselves happy. I've learned recently that if things really become bleak and hopeless, you have to learn to reconnect with yourself. Heres an example, where did your parents used to take you as a child? For me, I can think of lots of places, but one of the places that stands out for me is the zoo, so I went there the other week. Not only did it help with exposure, but I got to reconnect with myself, and pet the Donkeys which was lovely.

Do you have pets? If not, perhaps a couple of small pets will help you occupy your time and give you something to focus on, whilst you're applying for new jobs.

It took me 3 months to get the job I'm in at the moment, and I haven't had the best employment record. If you got turned down for the jobs you've been applying for, its probably for the best. You may have been at loggerheads with them and quit within 3 months. I've learned the hard way a few times that if you don't get on with your colleagues, you get driven out of the job through constant prodding and bullying. Another thing you have to remember is that employers get really fussy about experience, so it may be useful, if not done so already to do some volunteer work for charities perhaps, in your preferred field.

Another option, if not done so already is to register with temp agencies to get employment of some sort and get some money coming in. I, myself have got a few temp to permanent jobs, which worked out okay and got me an income. At least from this angle, you can work your way into your preferred field.

I'm guessing that a lot of this you've done already, but I hope some of it helps

  4. Hi Belle,

Sorry you are feeling so low at the moiment, I know just how you feel.
I have just come through a relapse of OCD and depression. I know when you are going through it is hard to see that things will ever improve but they will.

We have to be patient and never give up hope. I have just started some voluntary work a couple of weeks ago and it does help with getting confidence back and also gives us something to get up for. I seriously recommend it if you can.

Well done for getting through Uni, what did you study? And keep applying for jobs, the right one will come along soon I'm sure. And most importantly, don't give up hope, you will feel better soon, you just have to fight for it in the beginning when things are tough.

Also keep posting on the forum, we all understand what it's like.

    Take Care

  5. Thanks everyone. Feeling a bit better today. Was just having one of those moments when everything becomes overwhelming yesterday. I have a Masters degree in Film and Television studies and would love to work in archives and research. I've done most of the things suggested and have offered to work for a number of companies on a voluntary basis to no avail. Not really sure what else to do but to keep trying. It's all so tiring though.
