  1. Hey. I'd appreciate some advice about medication. I was on fluoxetine (Prozac) before. It seemed to help, in combination with CBT. But it also seemed to give me side-effects: mainly related to sexual function (the less details the better!). I therefore withdrew from it (gradually) but now feel I need some sort of medication again. My psychiatrist has suggested duloxetine (Cymbalta) as an alternative medication to try. It seems it's not in the main SSRI group as it also affects other neurotransmitters. Has anyone tried it? I'd really appreciate any meaningful insight into: A. Duloxetine (Cymbalta) B. Other drugs which may be less likely to cause sexual function related side effects. Thanks!

  2. Hi,

    Welcome to the forum.

I'm not on any medication for my OCD because of other medical conditions, but it was suggested that I take Mirtazepine and when I looked it up it did say that it didn't cause sexual function problems and that it was one of the few antidepressants not to cause problems in that respect. With regards to Duloxetine I'm afraid I've not heard of any one that has taken it, though when I looked it up it does list impotence as a side effect.

You really need to discuss this with your psychiatrist and express the concerns that you have with regards to the sexual side effects of the medications. A professional is the only person who can help you with regards to choice of medication.

    Best wishes

  3. Thanks for your reply, Trudy. I really appreciate it.

I'd welcome insight from others too.

Trudy, I've just looked up Mirtazapine. Although I'd ideally prefer to stick with SSRIs as they seem to be proven more effective than other drugs for OCD, I think it is worth me discussing the likes of Mirtazapine (which seems to be classified as a tetracyclic antidepressant) with my psychiatrist. So, thank you for drawing my attention to it. Encouragingly, my limited research just now suggests Mirtazapine has shown to be "useful" in treating OCD.

    Hi again

With so many new people having joined the forum, I thought it would be a good idea to discuss meds again.

What has surprised me since joining the forum is not only that different sufferers do better on different meds but also that there is such a wide variation in the dose levels that we are prescribed.

I was on 250mg of anafranil for years and it neither helped with the thoughts nor my depression. Yet 10mg of citalopram has taken away some of my anxiety and most definitley helps with the thoughts.

It would be interesting to know if any of you have had similar experiences.
