Is there no way of telling which threads have new posts?

  1. On the old forum, you could tell just by looking at the list which threads had new posts that you hadn't seen yet. This is a fairly standard feature of most forums. But this one doesn't seem to have anything like that. Is there any way it could be put in? It would make the forum much easier to use. I did try to mention this before, but the post didn't seem to appear.
    Thanks,

  2. Hi Wombat140,

No problem! Apologies for the previous post problem you may have had - this issue was unexpectedly caused whilst transferring old usernames from the old one (now fixed). This new forum can be adapted quite nicely, so I'll have a look and see if I can implement something like this for you.

Just to confirm - Do you mean the little icons that appear on the left-hand side to denote when someone has replied to a thread, or started a new topic etc?

  3. On the old php forum there is an icon next to each forum heading that turned red when there was a new posting in that forum and when you entered the individual forum the icon was red against postings the user had not seen since the last visit. This was an extremely useful facilitiy as it instantly told the user if there were new posts. If this could be used on this forum in addition to being helpful to users it would be a great help to moderators who need to look at all postings.

  4. Ah yes, this is fairly standard on other forum software, so I'll have a look and see if I can implement this for tomorrow (will need to do some testing on my machine first).

Certainly agree its a very useful feature!

I'll also enable Smilies, and Signatures.

  5. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! Glad to know that it's still possible to make changes. I thought maybe that was it now that the new system was in place.

Do you know, when I got your e-mail I thought it was a mistake? I'd completely forgotten about the missing post!

I'd like to say thanks for not having loads of animations! And for getting the formatting buttons back. You're doing a great job, keep it up!

  6. Hi again!

Okay, I've just added in the icon (unread posts) function for you. Topics now have icons associated with them. So any new topics will generate an icon with a "+" sign. Also, if a user logs in, but hasn't read a series of posts then the text will appear as bold text. Is this okay? I've tested it only with myself, so if there are any minor bugs then let me know and I'll mend it.

I'll shortly add a button "mark all as read", which gives users a chance to set everything as read if they haven't been on the forum for a while.

Also, I've added a few more functions in the process:

    1. hot topics - is there's a popular topic, then a small star will appear.

    2. report user - very import this one, if any user abuses the forum, then any member can click on this button to report them to an administrator. The admin will be notified and will take appropriate action.

ps: first bug detected with topic icons. I'll have to deactivate them for now, however users will still see bold text for posts they haven't yet read.

  7. Hi Sysop,
I'm new to the internet and having to teach myself as I go along. I'm sure that I can't be the only one out there that finds the following a little confusing -
Last week the forum was very basic now you keep adding things and I don't know what some of the things are.
So for Thickos like me could we have a page that we could refer to that explains the various functions, what the buttons (if that's what they're called) on the reply post box do and what the different icons on the forum list mean etc. Some of us have never used a forum before and there are no books to explain what to do.
    Thanks
    From an even more confused

  8. Hi Truddles,

No problem! I'll make a little key on the upper-right corder of the forum area to show what each icon means. This will be up shortly for you.

  9. Sysop'
    It's me again.
How about a symbol to represent a hug, so that when people are really low we can send them a hug.
Thanks for your help I've learnt a lot on the forum not just about OCD but also about using the internet. It helps my OCD to feel that I've achieved something however small.
