  1. I started going to the cinema again a couple of weeks ago after being kept out by my OCD for eleven years or so. And i used to love the cinema. So I thought I would start a film club here.

I'm going to post brief thoughts on the films I go to the cinema to see, because each one is an OCD win and it will motivate me.

You post what you like. It's that sort of club

    Hugs

    David

  2. The Green Lantern 3D

My first 3d film ever. The 3d was much better than I expected, although the film seemed a little grainier than usual. Plot wise not much going on here, but the special effects are great. A bit silly but a good laugh. Heavily biased by being amazed that I managed to go to the cinema at all.

  3. Transformers 3: The Dark of The Moon 3d

    Acting 1/5
    Plot 1/5
    Dialogue 1/5
    Plausibility 0/5
Big 3d robots beating the heck out of each other 5/5

    Overall 5/5

(I REALLY enjoyed the big 3d robots beating the heck out of each other)

  4. Kung Fu Panda 2: 3D

This time we all went so the film had to be something we could all watch. The film was OK, funny in parts, usual emotional heartstring tugging bits and so on. Nice blend of different animation styles too. The 3D was really impressive, possibly because the whole thing was done on computers, but it really was very convincing.

So anyone got any recommendations what Andrew and I should go see next weekend?

  5. THE THIEF OF BAGDAD(1940)

  6. Harry Potter! I am going to see that soon. I think that would be GREAT in 3D!

    Tue Jul 12 2011 13:00:40 #
  7. Thanks for those. Not sure the Thief of Baghdad is showing in Edinburgh but well look for it. The Harry potter is promised to his girlfriend so I'm ruled out of that one.

I've seen the trailer or the Rise of the Planet of the Apes and it looks brill, but then I grew up with the Apes films and I loved them all........

    Has anyone seen Bridesmaids?

  9. X Men: First class

OCD dream today. Went to the cinema with Andrew and we were the only people there. Had the whole place to ourselves. Don't think that's ever happened to me before.

Ok movie. After recent selections I dearly want to see something where things don't blow up, but I grew up reading X- Men comics and I liked this take on the start of it.

But honestly, I need to see a comedy next. Or a serious film. Or just something where things don't blow up.

  10. Bridesmaids

Fairly strong stuff. Lots of language and sexual references but pretty funny nonetheless. Simple enough romantic comedy based around two competing bridesmaids.

Not one for the kiddies. But maxthedog has seen it and reckons it is hysterical.

  11. I want to watch horrible bosses, but films with Jennifer Aniston in tend to suck (sorry Jen)

    I love transformers!

  12. Gilda (1946)

Dragged the boy to see the restored print of Gilda from 1946. not sure he has seen a black and White film before.

Stunning. Rita Hayworth was simply stunning and believable as the femme fatale. Excellent movie. Not sure how Andrew felt about it. I think his attention wandered a little. I was enthralled. Gamblers, cartels, south American gangsters. No robots, no explosions no swearing.

    Wonderful

    Sun Jul 24 2011 21:07:38 #
  13. North by Northwest (1964)

As we were leaving the film house having seen Gilda, we realised that they were about to strategy a shoeing of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest. So I asked Andrew if he fancied it and he said yes.

Thrilling stuff. James Mason, Cary grant, Eve Marie Saint. Mistaken identity, murders, double crosses. Fights in cornfields and on Mount Rushmore. Years since I first saw it, and never in a cinema, it was simply breathtaking. I'd forgotten how much of modern film grammar was set by Hitchcock in the 1960s

NOW, AM I TO BELIEVE I AM THE ONLY ONE GOING TO THE CINEMA HERE? C'MON FOLKS......REVIEW SOMETHING!!!!

    Sun Jul 24 2011 21:11:27 #
  14. Sorry David
Last time we went to the cinema they had one side for smokers and one side for non-smokers so leave you to work out how long ago that was.

    Mon Jul 25 2011 8:53:01 #
  15. Oh this were the days. I gave p smoking about eight years ago, and I remember the glory days of being able to smoke in the cinema.

And they do show movies on tv too, so everyone can join in, they don't have to see them in he cinema!

    Mon Jul 25 2011 22:38:35 #
  16. Whisky Galore

Ealing comedy. Black and White. Scottish islanders hiding shipwrecked whicky from the revenue.

    Brilliant. Simply brilliant

  17. Horrible Bosses

Back to modern day movies with a bang, quite funny, a bit coarse, Andrew liked it a lot. Nothing too remarkable here but a pleasant diversion. This is the most full the cinema has been since I started going again but I was ok. In fact being in a full cinema for a comedy really helped the experience.

Nothing too remarkable in the plot, but some good performances from the main six.

  18. Cars 2

    Not exactly a review but . . .

I was at my Aunt's today and a friend of her's called in to see her with their daughter who is about six years old. She's a bright little girl and is going to see Cars 2 with her mother and she told me that I couldn't go to see it as I didn't have children. Apparently according to her if you don't have children you're not allowed to see the film and she couldn't help it but those were the rules, but that if I got some children then they would let me in to see the film

  19. Super 8.

Nice effects, but I didn't quite get the point of the plot. After the show, first thing I told my friend, "I think I might have to watch that one again".

I'm planning to catch Captain America. Anyone watched that yet?

    Tue Aug 2 2011 10:59:33 #
  20. Super 8

Thelazypick makes a good point about the plot. But viewing it as a cross between a dark ET and the Goonies is not a bad angle to take. Effects were great and I thought the child actors were absolutely excellent. The ending is a little quick and easy, but the effects were top notch.

Saw it with my eleven year old daughter and she found it a bit on the scary side.

12a as a certificate seems a little low.....

  21. Mr Popper's Penguins

Sometimes it can be a mistake reading reviews before going to a film. I'd read some real shimmers about this film, but my daughter really wanted to see it so off I went with no real expectations.

And in the end it wasn't bad at all. It's a Jim Carrey movie, so you'll know what to expect, but there isn't too much of the burning and goofing that usually goes on. The penguins are pretty good, although some of the humour is. A little scatological. There is a nice little supporting character of a PA who largely uses only words beginning with "p" and some decent performances from the child actors.

So it could have been a lot worse. I ended up enjoying it. Silly, but entertaining.

  23. Hi kitten
Welcome to the forum. Pleased to see you are an animal lover like me. I've noticed that a lot of OCD sufferers seem to have a strong sense of compassion for other species. I remember at the age of about three getting hysterical when my mum stepped on an ant which had frightened me.
I don't do horror any more though, learned my lesson in my teens pretending I was older than I really was to get into horror films and suffered decades of nightmares.

  24. Welcome to the Film Club kitten3000,

I think I gave up with the Scream series after number 2 and don't remember it at all.

I don't need to go to horror movies anymore (I have children now and they are horrible enough), but I used to love them, back in the day. I remember scaring myself silly when Alien came out....

I'm taking my daughter to see The Smurfs this week and I suspect that will be horrific, but not perhaps in the way you mean!

  25. The Tree of Life

I went ot this film with an intelligent fifteen year old, an honours politics graduate and an English literature honours student, and NOT ONE of us understood it.

You know those weird perfume adverts with whispering and beautiful photographs and wobbly cameras? Well this film is like a two and a half hour version of those.

If anyone can explain this film to me, PLEASE PM me immediately

  26. The Smurfs

    Went with Claire (11).

It is what it is. It is a kids movie, a few funny bits, pretty basic plot, decent effects, cute Smurfs. What else is there to say? One for the youngsters.

  27. L'illusionniste (The Illusionist)

Stunningly beautiful, sad and gentle animated feature about a magician who comes from France to Scotland in the. 1950s. Via the western isles, where he picks up a naive follower who believes that the conjuring is real, he ends up in Edinburgh.

A simple, touching story told with sensitivity and humour. Beautiful animation, really captures Edinburgh, about ten years before I really remember it.

    Simply, a joy.

  30. Rise of The Planet Of The Apes

I think the first time I went to the cinema after beating the OCD issues with it, I saw a trailer for this film and wanted to see it.

I should admit that I am 48 and grew up with the Planet of the Apes movies and loved them all. when I saw the trailer and before the title of the movie came up, I kept thinking that this would be a great way to explain the Planet of the Apes saga. Got goosebumps when the title came up.

So finally managed to drag the family to see this today.

It's good. Very good. Effects are awesome, but then they always are these days. There are genuinely tear jerking moments. Not going to say too much as don't want to spoil it for anyone, so I'll just say highly recommended.

And if you know the old movies as well as I do, there are some lovely little references to the original series.
