  2. Hi Blueboy... I slipped up last night and didn't have a drink at all! Mind you, I was feeling a bit queezy after all the party food I scoffed... I put it down to my natural defences doing their thing, cos it passed fairly quickly...
I'm tired tonight though, even though I slept in late this morning...
You must have a very good processing system to cope with all that booze! I cannot drink much at all these days before I cannot stand up straight, let alone do anything else! A good party is how I describe it!!
Are you on any medication? I have to be careful with all the stuff I'm on!

  3. Please be careful if you're on meds. Alcohol heightens OCD symptoms. I hope you had a good time last night though,

  6. Paul - correction, you drank 7 pints of special brew in one day and ate two mars bars and did not FEEL any ill effects - these binges have a nasty habit of doing insidious damage to our bodies which do not appear until later in life. Our bodies are very resilient and will cope with occasional gastronomic suicide but if you want a long and healthy life free from OCD you can't do it on a regular basis.

  7. I agree with Tess, you might not have felt any side effects but drinking like that is taking a toll on your body. Alcohol in that quantity combined with medication puts one hell of strain on your liver and is a potentially lethal cocktail.
Perhaps you could help me to understand the following - You say that you are careful with what you eat and only eat organic produce and yet you don't seem to worry that you're poisoning your body with excessive amounts of alcohol, a substance more toxic to the human body than non organic produce.

  8. i guess you are both right... you will be pleased to know that it was a one off... i've decided i will not buy any more drink... i will take one or two only if a social occasion calls for it... i dont mind that... even though i dont socialise right now... i made that decision.. infact i may never drink at all again. .and i can do that... switch off if i want.

  9. also, i'm thinking maybe because i have looked after myself well practicaly all my life ..that is the reason i can take that abuse now... but my decision is made not to drink alone in the house anymore.

  11. PS It might help if every time you feel tempted to buy alcohol you save the money you would have been willing to spend towards something to look forward to which will improve your life.

  16. Hi Blueboy -

my experience: at first, alcohol seems to go rather well with SSRI medication in OCD. A sense of freedom is found. OCD seems to recede into the distance. And one feels more bold, less inhibited.

But that changes over time. The amount of drink necessary to produce that effect increases. The side effects increase too. The energy to do other things decreases. The body quickly tires, even in small tasks.

In other words: for me it was a pretty dangerous route, and the interplay between SSRIs and alcohol wasn't so funny anymore.

So I had to change my habits (still am doing so, in fact).

Drinking a few every now and then is not bad. But really falling for the attraction of it all is. As a biologist, I find it surprising on hindsight that that pattern is really taking on different guises over a longer time period.

Oh: and take care about your liver... it, and the kidneys, and the pancreas all have to work overtime to process all that's coming in (if one uses medication, or other types of stimulants).

    Best, Cuthbert.

  17. For a long time we have had one alcoholic drink, either a glass of wine or cider about an hour before our evening meal and it's been very nice. Then one week we were a bit short of money and didn't buy any and we really missed it big time. So I started making a hot drink or cup of soup at the time we would have had an alcoholic drink and it was just as satisfying. So it was just habit, not addiction. So if you want to cut down on alcohol consumption it can help to substitute it with something warm and non-alcoholic.

  18. Hi everyone, I go along with that idea, Tess... It is like having a little treat, something you enjoy, which can lift the mood brilliantly. I'm known for the bit of fruit and nut chocolate too!
