  1. I went to my family doctor today (the one that isn't that great) and it was the first time since i have seen a psychiatrist recently, who diagnosed me with GAD and Panic Disorder with my OCD and also my substance abuse (alcohol) issues. I went to see my doctor, and she said "So this OCD she smiled "what, do you have something with doors or something, what do you get compulsory with?" I tried to explain that it varies, and mine are mostly bad thoughts and wanting to tell them out loud to whoever. Also, some days vary, sometimes its different and the compulsions are so ingrained i can't possibly state everything! I just couldn't believe the way she reacted. Lately, i have been noticing so much OCD stigma, i can't handle it, i feel like something needs to be done. Anyone with similar experiences? How did it make you feel? It made me second guess myself, of course, having ocd we do this all the time...

ps - 3 months quit smoking 3 weeks off alcohol, meds are working but lots of anger is coming out now *sigh*

  2. There are a lot of doctors who are just dismissive of their patients, no matter what condition they have. If you can, find a new doctor. The one you saw doesn't deserve to have any patients. (You'd need to be patient, having a doctor like that!)

I don't think it's necessarily to do with stigma. It's more to do with ignorance. The media takes little interest in OCD so there is little public interest or understanding.

  3. In my personal experience i have many bad experiences with docs when it come to ocd. It not just docs either that are like that. General people that don't understand or want to understand. Comments like so you wash your hands alot then. Yes ocd does affect people that way me included. There is alot more to OCD than that. Even if hand washing etc was a persons only problem it effects that person in numerous ways not just the fact that we have to wash our hands alot. Also if you have any other health conditions unrealated to OCD they are not taken seriously most docs assume eveything is down to or caused by ocd. Someone with mental health issues could not possibly have anything else wrong with them. Well that's what they think believe complete rubbish.
I have been delayed medical treatment and diagnosis of other health probelms because of uneducated docs blaming ocd, anxiety and depression.

Well done with trying to quit smoking and the alcohol keep it up.
