  1. I thought this was some sort of sick joke, but it appears to be real

  2. Best way to deal with this is never to buy the product and encourage others not to buy it. There is an old saying that all publicity is good publicity otherwise it would be tempting to make a public complaint.

  3. perhaps the guy who started the company has OCD?? maybe...or perhaps it means something other than obssesive compulsive?
and perhaps he gets paid to do "exposure response" therapy by cleaning!!
    you never know
    i found it quite funny
i did a newsletter for a group with some OCD jokes in...gotta laugh otherwise whats the other option? crying? when i tell people about my OCD it usually gives them a laugh and makes me feel a bit better about it

  4. I’ve just looked at the link and didn’t find it upsetting at all. I know we react differently to such things. One of my friends has discussed starting up such a company. She suffers from severe contamination fears and believes such a service would be very helpful.

However, an American company is selling the following products: ‘OCD Anti-Bacterial Sanitizers’ and ‘Maybe You Touched Your Genitals Hand Sanitizer’ and ‘Wash Away Your Sins’ wipes (for moral contamination). I read about these on David Veale’s website. He commented that he hopes we will find the products amusing. I didn’t particularly. View here: http://www.veale.co.uk/news/ocd-sanitizer/

I view the cleaning firm as useful and if I wanted a thorough cleaning service, and I lived in that area, I would possibly use this company. I would NEVER buy the products mentioned on David Veale’s site! I do view those as a 'sick joke'.

  5. OCD!, I certainly believe the cleaning firm's use of the acronym was referring to our condition, because of the reference to 'no cross contamination' etc. Who knows whether this was taking the Michael or a genuine reassurance that their staff have our concerns in mind.

  6. Don't know, at first sight. The home page does surely not look sensationalist or exploitative.

My impression (subject to eventual change): perhaps the owners thought that their URL may attract many more potential customers than one with only something referring to 'cleaning' alone (there must be tens of thousands of those floating in cyberspace).

See: anybody googling for anything with 'cleaning' and 'ocd' will have a chance of being directed to that Harrogate company. Which is publicity.

  8. Over the last few months I have learnt that there are certain subjects to avoid on this forum, and OCD humour is definitely one of them.

So I'm just going to say that I find the action figure deeply sick, and yet I really really want one. (I showed it to my wife and she agreed. Then added we should get one for my cbt therapist)

    Still chuckling.......

  9. One of the trustees of OCD Action has contacted the company to ask them about the company name. As soon as there is a reply I will post it here.

There are of course perfectly reasonable, understandable and innocent reasons to use the acronym "OCD" and perhaps in this case it is a shortening of Office, Commercial and Domestic Cleaning, however there is no point in speculating and I will wait for a reply.

  10. Is it not up to the company what name is chosen? If they do admit it’s an acronym for our condition, what then? Will the charity ask them to change it? I think we are being a little over sensitive. I think the acronym is perfectly reasonable, understandable and innocent, even if it does stand for 'obsessive compulsive disorder'. If David Veale can laugh at the products I referred to in a previous message, I think this company’s name is completely acceptable. And, as I have already mentioned, I would use their services - it sounds as if they do a thorough job. Isn't that what counts?!

  12. I only scanned this quickly first time round and was immediately put off by the bottle displaying the words OCD which I assumed was some form of sanitiser. But I do find the image in poor taste whatever it is meant to portray.

  13. Tess, did the cleaning products David Veale mentioned bother you? I have much more of an issue with them than the cleaning company. But, I do understand both views. I can't explain why one bothers me and the other doesn't!

  14. Hi BT
Haven't looked these up yet but will do so and report back tomorrow.

  15. Me again
Had a look at the Veale link and have to admit to chuckling at the Maybe you touched your genitals product. I think they are in poor taste but amusing so I can't honestly say I find them offensive. I think on balance I find them more acceptable than the cleaning company logo but on principle I wouldn't buy any product or service which uses OCD to promote itself.
