  1. Today i found out about ocd surgery, its a type of brain surgery called capsulotomy. I really have no idea what that means but apparently its quite effective. They only do the surgery in america, its supposed to be very effective but some people ended up incontinent and with disinhibtion which makes people have a hyposexuality or agressive outbursts. Im really scared that medication wont work so im looking into this for my future. Im guesing that it would cost alot and id have to go to america for a while. im only 18 though does anybody think this surgery is worth it ?

  3. Hi billboard,

You're only young and personally and this is only my opinion I'd be wary of having surgery. I also think I'm correct in saying no reputable surgeon would consider it until you had exhausted other forms of treatment. Remember just because it's on the internet doesn't mean that it's necessarily true. There's an awful lot of misinformation on the internet.

What treatment if any have you had so far? If you haven't received any treatment then you need to speak to your GP for referral for treatment. I know that you're young and feel as if there's no hope, but there's always hope. And with the right help you can gain control of the OCD.

Keep posting as you'll find you can get a lot of support from others and sometimes even answers that the professionals can't provide

  4. I'm from Canada and I've never heard of anything like this, so it could just be in the US. I don't think I would do it. I'm only 16, but like Trudy said, there is always hope. I've found lot's of support here on the forum just from reading other people's stories, even if I don't comment on them. Personally, I would wait until I was older before considering such a drastic step.

  5. I agree with No. 6 and Truddles, you are still very young and brain surgery is only for the completely debilitated ocd'er who has no quality of life. Yes, it's exhausting, yes, it's time consuming, yes, it's constant but brain surgery has to be a very last resort and only then if all the pros and cons have been thoroughly investigated and highly skilled and informed surgeons involved. I must say i've never heard of it being an option in getting rid of ocd. I would be very suspicious and concerned about going ahead with such an operation on my brain. Just my view. Pops

  6. It's not just between medication and brain surgery, you know. The most highly thought of treatment for OCD (better than medication) is cognitive-behaviour therapy, CBT for short. There's a page about it on the main OCDAction website - here's the link. Assuming you live in the UK, you're entitled to it for nothing on the NHS if you have a formal diagnosis of OCD. There's sometimes a rather long waiting list, but it's better than it was. Your doctor should have mentioned this to you already, but I thought I'd better tell you in case they haven't.

  7. Hii thank you for replying everyone. I know it seems really extreme and i didnt even know that you could have surgery for ocd but i have a really low quality of life. This is one of the websites iv read it on..
    http://www.cks.nhs.uk/patient_information_leaflet/obsessive_compulsive_disorder/treatment
iv been to see a phychologist and im on a 6 month waiting list for CBT but i really just cant wait. i have no one to talk to and i am terrified of the thought of feeling like this for the rest of my life. i have ocd since i was about seven properly but for the past couple of years in been really extreme and even in my dreams.
I just thought that if i had the operation then it would be gone but it costs $17000. i know its abit dramatic of me but i really just dont want to be on medication or be in therapy for the rest of my life.

  8. Who said you'd be "in therapy for the rest of your life"? The idea is, you do CBT for however long and gradually get rid of your OCD. Then you haven't got it so you don't need any more CBT. I'm not saying that the surgery isn't an option, of course, but given the risks you'd certainly be well advised to try everything else first.

If it's just that you can't wait 6 months, then it would be a lot cheaper to see a CBT therapist privately to be going on with, although it would be as well to tell your doctor first in case it confuses things (you know what the NHS is). You should look for a therapist who's registered with the BABCP, then you can be sure they know their onions.

Oh, and you can always talk to us, you know. That's what this forum is for.
    All the best,
