  1. Hi all,

I have suffered with BDD for about 14 years now and tried all manner of treatments. My healthcare team are in the process of applying for treatment at the Bethlem in London.

Does anyone have experience of treatment there? I am terrified of the whole experience, environment etc

    Thanks.

i was a patient at the bethlam for a twelve week stay, you have no need to be terrified because the hospital is very good, the ocd/bdd therapist are brilliant. i thought it had a really friendly atmosphere.
you have no need to worry, the bethlam royal is the best hospital for your illness.

  3. Hi motto

I too was a patient at the Bethlem nearly two years ago now. I was there for OCD and the therapist's were really nice and easy to talk to. The other residents staying there made me feel welcome and soon I felt part of the group, although you do not have to mix with them all of the time, if you do not wish. There were a mixed bunch of people when I was there, some with OCD, like myself and some with BDD.
I am sure your experience will be fine and I wish you luck.

    Regards, K xx

  4. Thank you so much for the replies

If you have time can you message me with more details about your stay? I am not sure I could cope with 12 weeks away from home

I also need to get funding approved which I believe is not easy to obtain.

    Many thanks.

  5. Hi motto,
Although I stayed at the Bethlem unfortunately, I did not stay for all of the twelve weeks because of childcare issues, which is sad.
All I can say is that it is a very friendly atmosphere and you soon get to know people and feel less alone.
The therapist will talk to you about your treatment .

When I was there I would stay for one week, then go home for the weekend and return again on either the Sunday night or Monday morning, that worked for me with the children. After two weeks I then did three days a week for a further three weeks.
I think you need to do what works for you. Other residents stayed also for the weekend, but not every time.
We all had our own rooms with a key and could also leave the site if we wished to, to go to the local shops etc.

I had the funding approved, it took a little while and then I was put on a waiting list for my stay.
Please be patient and I am sure things will move in the right direction for you. I hope this has helped you a little and you get treated very soon. Wish you well, K xxx.
