I'm going to the conference in November. Is anyone else from the forum going?
Hiya Trudy -
I would, if I could find the funds to pay for a round trip and hotel accomodation and all the rest. Just saw the programme... hugely interesting, and important for non-patients too.
So: I'm sorry...
But: have a nice evening, cheers, Cuthbert in the Netherlands.
Yes, I am going with my other half
Hi All,
I'm going, look forward to meeting you all there.
Would love to come but distance and OCD are burdens which are just too big for my own welfare.
Am considering coming down with maxthedog.
What time does the Agm end? Does anyone know?
David
Hi David,
In previous years the AGM has not lasted for more that one to one and a half hours and I would be surprised if this one was any different. However, because of the very nature of an AGM it is unpredictable. There can be a lot to discuss and members may have a lot of questions which must be answered. This can take time as there may be a lot of discussion. Also, new trustees and a new chairperson can be elected who may have very different ways of conducting the business.
However, having said all that I can only reiterate my first sentence where in my opinion based on past AGMs it is unlikely to go on for a very long time. I would suggest that members who are travelling long distances leave plenty of time for their train or booked transport.
But most importantly can I appeal to members to attend the AGM if you possible can to have your say about the way your organisation is run and what it does and importantly what you can do to help.

Would help though if we knew what time it started

Just realised will have to get up early
Just realised will have to get up early
Well if we make it, well have to start out the day before!
The way that my OCD is playing up at the moment I too will have to start out the day before
There is a limit on the number of people that can be accommodated in the conference venue. All places were taken last year and regretably there were some people who were disappointed. To avoid disappointment, if you haven't already done so, book your place now

Hi everyone... My OCD would prevent me from going... I daren't shake hands with anyone lest I pass something to them, regardless of them maybe already having the same on their hands... I just cannot face it...

Hi wannabe
Everyone would understand so don't let that stop you going. I went to the conference before last and there were tissues all over the floor outside the loos where people had used them to avoid touching the door handles.
As Tess says, everyone would understand if you didn't want to shake hands or not do anything else - or even to do something else. The conference is a good opportunity to relax as nobody is judging you or thinking that you are behaving in a strange or unacceptable way and you won't have to explain or justify your actions to anyone. It's a good place to meet others and to discuss things with them and this relaxed social side of the conference is just as important and interesting as the sessions and presentations. It really is an opportunity meet and discuss with others, including leading OCD specialists, and to find out what is going on in the "OCD world". Someone on the forum (I think it was Truddles but I am not sure)said that there would be an opportunity for forum users to meet after the conference and AGM.
Nimrod
Hope you can attend
Hi Tess, and you to Nimrod, thank you for your kind replies. I'll see what can be arranged...

I would love to be able to come but the journey from Cornwall is just too daunting - and expensive. Last time it knocked me for six and it means putting too much extra stress on my husband getting me too and from stations at uneartly hours as well. But I will be with you all in spirit and look forward to reading all the presentations afterwards. The opportunity to meet other forum users is a great idea, I met some of the members two years ago and it really increases the feeling of belonging to a big family.
PS Just an afterthought - it would have been nice to have had a quick introduction to other forum users at an early stage so that people who wanted to could get together to eat their sandwiches or go out for a snack together, especially for those who are on their own - maybe just a big sign marked Forum Users where members could congregate and get to know each other and then perhaps find someone they could sit next to during the presentation. These big events can feel quite overwhelming when you arrive if you don't know anyone. I know everyone does their utmost to be friendly and welcoming but for someone like me not used to crowds or the hustle and bustle of a city it can take massive courage just to get inside the entrance door.
Wasn't me that posted it on the forum
it was however posted in the following thread http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/forums/topic/ocd-action%E2%80%99s-conference-and-agm-2011 where it said
Forum members note:
During the lunch break one of the many activities arranged will be a meet up for members of the forum. This is a chance for members to meet and get to know each other.
It is daunting especially if you have OCD to turn up for a conference and go in alone and although we know each other from the forum, we wouldn't recognise each other.
So I was going to do the same as I did last conference - last time I arranged for everyone from the forum that was going to the conference and didn't want to go in alone to meet outside the conference venue so that we could then go in together. I will do the same this year so that no one needs to feel that they can't go to the conference because they won't know anyone there.
So anyone that doesn't want to go in alone if they contact me by PM we can make arrangements to meet and I can give you my contact details nearer the time.

Trudy, that is a brilliant suggestion and I just want to say publicly I know you haven't been well but you should give yourself a huge pat on the back. Two years ago I remember a Trudy who didn't think she would be able to cope with getting to the conference and who needed a massive amount of support to be able to get there - and now you can not only get there but be available outside the door to help others face going in.
Thanks Tess,
It was because two years ago I didn't want to go in alone that I suggested meeting outside and all going in together. Plus the whole idea of the forum that we are there to help and support each other, including enabling each other to get to the conference.
I look forward to seeing you all there, book now to ensure that you are able to come by going to http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/forums/topic/ocd-action%E2%80%99s-conference-and-agm-2011
