I was a volunteer with Small Voices (The UK Federation of Smaller Mental Health Agencies) Currently I’m a ambassador with them - but we are in the throes of winding up and passing funds on to a worthy other charity or group. I am also active with The Justice in Health Network. What is your position? I hold no specific post or have any special role with any organization. For many years, I was The Chair of Small Voices. For how long have you worked in the caring sector? I have always been a volunteer. I attended The Carers Action Group and Network sometimes giving presentations or helping with First Response at The London Development Centre. I remain active but let’s say I am resting on my laurels right now. What experience do you have? Lots, but It’s petering out nowadays. I spent over fifteen years with the sector and remain, on the fringe. What inspired you to work in the caring sector? I have friends who encouraged me to become involved. I enjoyed the roles I took on – challenging, often exciting experiences led to more. However, I truly felt passionate and was dedicated to bringing about ‘changes for the better’. I had firsthand experience as a carer as well as needing caring for myself at times. What do you feel are the benefits of your role? Personal development. empowerment, socialising - using my faculties and skills to full capacity. Above all seeing changes occur – wishful ‘pigs-might-fly’ thinking becoming established good practice. What do you see as some of the challenges that the carers face in the next few years? For me it’s wanting to ensure care, especially in care homes, is dignified and humane. I think many care homes are ‘wicked’ uncaring ‘dust-bins of old people’. This is evil and totally wrong. As a former Carer I wanted to make a difference to how Carers were treated by raising their profile What do you feel are the benefits of your role? We provide one to one support for the carer in their own right making sure their needs are assessed. We give information and advice, help get practical support to help carers maintain their own health and balance caring with other aspects of their lives. What do you see as some of the challenges that the carers face in the next few years? Public sector spending will be subject to greater scrutiny than ever which will have an impact on carers having to fill the gaps. Health and financial issues already impacts the lives of carers but without recognition from the government these issues will increase.
