All the other chicken used to stand underneath waiting for it to roll down and grab it and she wouldn't lay when anyone was watching. One day my husband hid behind the wall and as the egg was laid he jumped out and caught it before it hit the ground. We ended up with a fist shaped egg and that was the day we learned that eggs are like soft jelly inside a membrane as they are laid and the shells harden within seconds as they are exposed to the air. If the egg drops into water as it is laid it will stay in it's jelly like state and when you take it out of the water it will not harden. We sometimes have to fish jelly eggs out of the water trough.
