hi Parvez,
We think that the needs of people with OCD would be best served by one strong and united organisation. We have been talking to OCD-UK about this and of the merits of working more closely together. Unfortunately they do not feel that this is something that they want to do at this time. We remain hopeful that we can work together in the future.
Joel
Director, OCD Action

OCD Action does not have any formal links with other OCD organisations or charities but we do and are always willing to talk to other organisations to find ways of improving and expanding what we can do for people with OCD and their carers and families.

OCD Action is the oldest and largest OCD charity by far. OCD UK was started some years after OCD Action (OCD Action was called Obsessive Action at that time) by someone who was actively involved with OCD Action who wanted to provide a service in different ways. Since then OCD Action has grown in size with more members and now has greater capacity and ability has been able to considerably expand services, such as the introduction of the Advocacy Service, email and phone help line. It has become better poised both financially and in terms of resource availability and expertise and this is enabling OCD Action to plan and to campaign more for better provision for sufferers and carers and to continue to expand services. OCD Action is recognised as the patient/carer organisation for people with OCD by the NHS and other governmental organisations. Much of our work is "behind the scenes" such as contact with various government departments and representation on the NHS N.I.C.E. OCD Guideline Development Group where 5 of the 19 members were active members of OCD Action.

We think that the needs of people with OCD would be best served by one strong and united organisation. We have been actively trying to persuade OCD-UK of this and of the merits of working more closely together. Unfortunately they do not feel that this is something that they want to do. We have not given up hope though.

Clearly where there are multiple organisations there will be some duplication of effort that will consume some resources that could otherwise be used to provide service. A good example of how to better serve people is the recent combining of the two major cancer charities into one organisation. Our prime concern is doing the best for people with OCD and we are willing to look at any and all ways of achieving that.

I hope this explains the situation but do ask away if you have any questions and please let us have your comments, suggestions and views.

Best wishes,
Caps

Hi Caps

I am curious to know if OCD Action has any links with OCD-UK or any other OCD organisations? Do you collaborate with other OCD charities or do you function totally separately? Do you think it is a good thing to have more than one OCD charity in the UK or would it be more efficient to pool resources and act as a single body? Are you duplicating effort or is it beneficial to provide OCD sufferers with alternative sources of help? Did OCD Action and OCD-UK start as a single organisation that later split in two?

Hope you don't mind me asking.
Many thanks ... Parvez
