Hi actionagainstocd,

I've just finished reading a book called 'Breaking Free from OCD' by Jo Derisley.

It's called a CBT Guide for Young People and Their Families and is aimed at younger people and their parents or carers. It's well presented and is by no means boring and explains things simply but in depth and contains plenty of work sheets for you to work through. It explains CBT and how to do it - a lot better than some of the books for adults and I'm going to work through some of the worksheets myself

At the end of each chapter there is information for the parent or carer giving them advice on how to help the young person with OCD. This book might help your mum to understand what you're going through and more importantly how she can work with you to help you overcome this.

Well worth a read what ever your age, especially if you're stuck with your CBT.

Trudy

It's good to feel that you're not alone. Talking to others that are going through similar problems does help.
You can send me a PM if you need to talk, just click on the send message bar below my avatar. But I might not be able to always reply immediately as my internet is playing up at the moment, but I will reply.

Hi Actionagainstocd,

Welcome to the forum.

OCD can be a real bully and completely take over our lives.

I too found joining this forum extremely hard but it was the best thing that I could have done. The help and support that I have received from people on this forum has helped me to start dealing with my OCD. It's very brave of you taking the first step and joining this site and you should be proud of it.

You really do need to go to your GP in order to get a diagnosis and then treatment. The treatment of choice at the moment is CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). Can I suggest that you make a list of all your obsessions and compulsions and a list of any questions that you might have to take with you when you go to the GP as it's so easy to forget things.

If you go to the right hand side of this page and click on the orange box entitled 'It's time to know' it will take you to the online resources centre where you can access and download information on OCD. Perhaps you could show some of the information to your mum, this will help her to understand what OCD is. We all tend to forget that parents aren't psychic (even if they seem to be ) and if we don't tell them what the problem is they can't help can they?

I'm sure that your parents aren't ashamed of you, they're probably confused by your behaviour and don't understand what is happening.

Joining in on the forum will mean that you don't have to go through this alone. We're a friendly forum and do our best to help and support each other.

A lot of members your age tend to join in on the OCD forum as it's a bigger forum and so there's more people to talk to.

Best wishes
Trudy

Hello

I haven't exactly been diagnosed with OCD but it definatley fits. I'm 14 and i know it sounds stupid but even joining this webiste has been a big step considering my OCD takes up my whole life. I have a strict routine for every second of the day that can't be interupted and includes staying in the house all the time. My mum and dad are ashamed of how boring i am and how i'm not at all like anyone my age who all go out have boyfriends and have a life but as much as i want to be what they want to me to be like i just can't do it. OCD takes over my life. I don't know how to tell my mum. If anyone could help it would be very much appreciated.
