Hmmm I haven't thought about it but is a nice idea, I guess it makes less complicated to manage. When I've started with sympthoms I imagined in my mind 3 personalities Me, a fearful one and a bully one, but since a time my mind was quiet I forgot about it. I'll think in names for them.

I have decided that my OCD feels like a guy - not sure why. I'm naming him "Golum" because just like Golum it masquerades as your friend and protector, the reality is that it is a manipulative, evil troll. Remembering that he is an enemy may help me to cease the compulsions instead of feed them.

Hi applegreen,

Welcome to the forum.

I find when the OCD is really playing up I can address my OCD by name and tell it to get lost and that it isn't welcome. Quite often it doesn't work but makes me feel better being able to address it by name. It's better than taking it out on me.

wow, I've never thought of doing this before. I think of my OCD as a bully, but maybe I should pick something more pathetic sounding so I can laugh at it?

Hi James,

I hope that you're feeling a little better today.

I've only been able to start making the small changes because of the support of the forum. I have even made some really good friends and so now I don't feel so isolated.

I've managed to start tackling some of the other things, but at the moment the contamination fear remains and dominates my day. But I'm sure a lot of it about getting your confidence back (not feeling so isolated helps) and then we can start to give the OCD the boot.

Several of us have given our OCD self and our strong self a name. My strong self is TT (Terrific Truddles) and my OCD self is TB (troubled Bubbles - Because I use too much hand wash!) TT can then tell TB to get lost and I don't feel so frustrated. See the topic 'How about giving your OCD a name?' for some of the names other members are using.

Best wishes
Trudy

Thank you all for your quick and supportive replies. It's nice to be among a nice group of people. I've been too isolated for too long.

It is frightening trying to change the way we think but the following is true.

As Rena wrote, we frequently say ‘what if?’ As I said, there are no guarantees, but a better question for us all is ‘what if I stay as I am, what quality of life am I going to have?’

With OCD we have no quality of life the only alternative is to try to change and to regain some control.

I was hoping James would describe what it is he fears. But, re-reading his message, I realize it doesn’t really matter what the fear is.

If it’s dominating your life, James, it is almost certainly exaggerated and unrealistic. There are no guarantees with anything, other than the obvious, and if our lives are so restricted by our concerns then it’s better to take risks anyway.

I was terrified of germs as a child and went to great lengths to avoid them. My logic, if used in an operating theatre, would have made sense. In everyday life, it didn’t. There was a small chance, that by living that way, I would have avoided some disease which could have killed me. However, there was a much greater chance that I would have been ill taking all the precautions I did, because by living in as sterile an environment as was humanely possible, I was a greater target for germs, as my immune system was unused to them.

I don’t know what it is you fear, but I reached the conclusion that even going to the lengths I did, I couldn’t avoid germs altogether. Also, by attempting to do so, I had no quality of life anyway. This helped me to face the fear and I was surprised how quickly it subsided.

As Rena wrote, we frequently say ‘what if?’ As I said, there are no guarantees, but a better question for us all is ‘what if I stay as I am, what quality of life am I going to have?’

There’s no guarantee that will work for us, either, but we have to do whatever we can to try to gain some control.

Best wishes,
Tricia.
