Hi again. I'm inclined to think that the intrusive thoughts about imperfections of body structures are as a result of the OCD, rather than the other way around. We analyze everything, and try to find reason for everything, when the OCD makes this very difficult, and we latch onto anything we can, in an effort to reassure ourselves of a cause. Physical ailments are much more easy to work with, cos we can see/feel them, and it sort of gives something we can apply the blame to. People with OCD don't necessarily give these things a single thought, but us, we analyze everything into the ground. I wish I knew the answer to this. I guess if any of us knew for sure we could sell our idea to the papers and be rich for life.
Hope you are coping okay today, Canary. Sorry I cannot be of more help this morning.

Mine is all intrusive thoughts all the time. I have had some medication for it but am unhappy with being 30% better and want 100%.

Now... please understand that this 'thing' in your mouth that might be causing this is probably not being noticed by you. It in underlying. Something you don't realize is bugging your brain but is.

I very much suspect it to be this spot above the soft palette. On either side.. maybe both.

Yes, that'd be good. Always nice to get to know a new member properly.

Nothing unusual anywhere in my mouth. At least, there's nothing that's different on one side, and there's nothing that gets on my nerves and believe me my nerves are easily got on. Mind you, I've never really had the obsessive thoughts like Canary mentioned, it's more tics and twitches at the moment (have a look at the "Sensorimotor OCD" thread, that's roughly what I'm getting).

Hi Canary
I don't personally think you are a troll because my gut feeling from your posts is that you are someone who has experienced OCD, but it is possible that your determination to follow this theory through is also part of the OCD. I agree with what Cuthbert has said about the mouth being immensely sensitive. I had a recurring infection under a badly root filled molar and I was so worried about having the tooth out and having to live with a gap or a bridge that I went to a specialist, paid a lot of money and had all the root filling removed and the tooth cleaned out - and I refused point blank to have a crown and insisted on the smallest possible inlay so that I kept the majority of my tooth, even though the dentist just kept telling me what I was trying to save was already dead. I went through two hours of non-stop drilling with a rubber membrane across my mouth to stop any of the old amalgam getting swallowed - and it was worth every second to avoid the risk of spiking my OCD with a gap.
But going back to the discussion over your post, how about teling us about your OCD and what you have already tried in the way of treatment so that we can get to know you a bit better.

Hi guys...
I'm really sorry to have upset anyone. Truly.
I really am just trying to get to the route of this. It's been a long time that I have been thinking this and I truly just thought it was worth exploring.
I know it's far out there. And I know it could just be an obsession.
But I also feel that I have a lot of reason to believe that it is a possibility. I think the mouth is extremely sensitive to everything and therefore affects our brain a whole lot. If anyone has ever had a colesore or a loose tooth... you just can't leave it alone until it's gone. Right?
I'm truly trying to help all of us. I'm sorry if it's upsetting some of you.
Let's just try this theory out. Some sort of simple common ground that we all have that non-ocders don't could POSSIBLY MAYBE be the key. And we work on hope, right?
I've clearly put a lot of thought into this so please understand that I am not a troll.
Anything. ANYTHING that has to do with your mouth or throat. TMJ (clicking jaw)? Mouth breathers? Thin jaw (teeth squeezing tongue)? ANYTHING. I'm here looking for your help. If I'm wrong then I can put this theory to bed. But I would really appreciate your support.
Thank you.

Hi David -

may I ask where Canary tries to sell her/his ideas? I must've overlooked this, and the site being not for profit or commerce, that would be a disappointment for me.

I did not criticise the ideas per se - please see my examples just above. In theory it is not impossible that some discomfort in the mouth is so distracting that it aggravates OCD.

But if there is some hidden agenda at work, then I'd be skeptical.

Regards, Cuthbert.

Hi Bingo

Very measured post. The negative comments on the forum only started after a dialogue between Canary and Wannabefree: when Wannabefree asked the forum for their opinions. Stylistically, Canary provided very explicit instructions, block capitals and a sales pitch to his emails. If a registered company called FIXYOUROCD did this on the site I would hope that then there would be moderation of the thread. Moreover, the negative slant that all OCD therapy achieves nothing does not fit with my and other people's experiences. Of your options, Tess I would ask the instigator to explain his/her need to sell his ideas.

My dentist has a female patient with a problem of recurring thoughts. She is convinced that something was done to her jaws (in terms of inserting pieces of bone, IIRC). Whilst the dentist described as a psychotic form of thinking, I thought: well, it's such a fixation, it certainly has elements of OCD to it.

The dentist knows that the woman is wrong in this belief, but she can't let go of it. Perhaps she (the woman) had some intense feeling of lack of equilibrium in her mouth, so that she senses some discomfort all of the time. Another possibility is a wrong and irritating occlusion of upper and lower teeth.

Tess' story of her son is another example. Sometimes people don't realise how lucky they are, in that such complex mechanisms work as they should.

And our tongues are extremely sensitive things - parts in our mouths feel much greater than they actually are.

But my dentist also pointed out that it is a very personal matter. There are people that lack one tooth, and are constantly ruminating on that. Others have but four original teeth left and come across as having no worry at all.

Just a few musings on the matter.

Best, Cuthbert.

Hi Bingo
Oh dear, it never occurred to me that Canary might be a troll - but I am inclined to think it is a genuine post by someone with experience of intrusive thoughts. It's not making me hot under the collar, in fact I'm finding it refreshing, interesting and somewhat amusing - but if it's upsetting others then I would not want to aggravate that. It might be useful to explore our feelings and work out why there may be potential for controversy because I think it could be based around stigma and people taking advantage/making a laughing stock of OCD sufferers. Do we rise above it, turn our backs on it, or seek more information from the instigator?

Hi,

Canary said "I have a theory that it is inside of my throat and or mouth. I am absolutely convinced of this. I believe that there is an underlying issue in the mouth or throat causing us to check what's wrong over and over and over again."

The other side of this is that it is the OCD making Canary think that the problem lies with the throat or mouth. But I am no more a medical person than Canary or anyone else on this forum.

It's an interesting theory or obsession and I quite understand Canary wanting to pursue the matter. However, there is part of me that suggests that this is a joke and that Canary may be a troll (I think that is the correct internet slang but I am not well up on these trends). What I do see is that this thread is becoming controversial. Now if Canary is a troll (and I apologise if he/she is not) then the controversy will drive the thread in the wrong direction and damage this forum community. Also, it is rather cruel to prey on sufferers who may be desperate to try anything to gain some relief from this incessant suffering.

This is a very friendly forum and a good source of support and it would be dreadful if it were to change. I do hope that people will be moderate in their response to this thread rather than being belligerent or antagonistic and the same goes for Canary who would also do well to be less assertive when replying to posters. An alternative to posting a response even if this thread makes you a little hot under the collar, is not to reply and simply ignore it. Forum members could communicate by PM rather than making a public posting.

Bingo

PS I'll try to remember to mention your theory at our next support group and we can all practice tongue relaxation and see if we get any results. So far I haven't mastered the art myself but then I have contamination OCD, not intrusive thoughts.

Hi Canary
I'm really sorry but I'm finding myself in agreement with Trudy. I've never investigated the softer areas of my mouth as it involves a lot of tongue stretching but yes, I have lumpy bits underneath my tongue and also a fine ridge along the soft palette in the top of my mouth and some loose skin - but I have no reason to think this is not the same as every other human being.
OCD can make us obsess over small parts of our anatomy. My son's OCD went out of control after he had a crown fitted on an incisor which felt marginally thicker than his other teeth and he spent a small fortune having private dental treatment trying to get an exact match, but it never satisfied him.
I think it is very important to investigate "out of the box" possibilities because at present there is no solution inside the box, but in this instance I think you are too far way from the box.

Wow.
So what you're telling me is that you're 100% correct in heading in the same direction we always have? It's making little headway.
What I'm saying is that perhaps the things that we attribute to anxiety should actually be seen in reverse.
I've tried this little trick with several different people with severe anxiety.

TRY THIS:
Sit in your place. Remain as tense as you always are. Now move your tongue slightly to the left. Relaxation occurs.

It's real. It's happened with everyone I've tried it with.

If you disagree with the THEORY by all means disregard it. But we will get nowhere without theories. I'm trying to get out of this like we all are.

I'm asking for your help.

I'm all for thinking outside of the box but it still has to be feasible and this isn't.
What you're describing can all be attributed to anxiety. When we're anxious or depressed we become more aware of bodily functions and sensations and can wrongly attribute these as being the cause of our problems when they are merely a physical symptom of our problem.
Your anxiety has made you become aware of what you consider to be a imperfection in your mouth, you then link this to the anxiety or thoughts that you are feeling.
Thoughts be they OCD or otherwise are chemical reactions in the brain not not the mouth.

I haven't really shared it before. It's just my own personal journey. I wasn't really happy with the ocd not being fully fixable. So I ventured on my own to think of what else it could be. Every problem has a solution.
I am extremely confident in this. I really think that you should all really examine this. Or we could all just keep sitting around discussing what medicine numbed us to a sufficient degree that day and how we are happy that we managed to do a load of laundry. This is real. I am confident.
I've called it 'The Princess & The Pea' effect. The princess can't sleep because there is a pea underneath a mattress nine mattresses below her. This is the same. Brain is freaking out because of an underlying discomfort level. It keeps checking and checking and checking and checking...
Still there.
Maybe we've found it. People... if we take this seriously we might stand an ACTUAL chance. Does that not excite you. It's worth a shot. This forum is called OCD ACTION. Let's take action... shall we?

Hi Canary, it is possible, but I'm not sure... But this is certainly an interesting theory... What do others think?

I'm just really convinced that this section above the soft palette is really the issue. I mean... sit still and do nothing for a second. Sitting straight up. Is that comfortable for you? Sit there until the panic starts. I suspect there is something in your mouth that is causing this stress.

Hi Canary... I'm wedged to the back of the chair some of the time, but the sitting still is cos I'm concentrating on typing. I've got so behind with posting... It is all good stuff though! <img src="http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":-)" class="bb_smilies" />

I think the key is.... try to sit still right now. What is wrong? You're sitting still. Are you comfortable? Something nagging at you? What is it ACTUALLY?

Hi Canary, I'm fascinated! I do have mysterious things in my mouth, but as they've always been there, I don't know if they are deformities or not. I do have a reputation for clicking my fillings... But I've always done that... I used to bite my nails incessantly until mouth crowns put an end to it. I also rock from side to side when sitting in a chair with no back to it. But I've always done it, I think... But then I've always had depression... So maybe I was always susceptible to developing OCD... Interesting stuff...

Wow. I really appreciate the feedback guys. Seriously. I think if we worked together we could really get to the bottom of this.

Now I really truly suspect that this mouth issue we just accept as a normal part of our mouths and so it's not even considered weird. I am convinced that there is a flap of skin that clumps up on my right side of my mouth above the soft palette causing this issue. In addition, this skin is like a slice of skin created in the same fashion as strep throat skin inside the mouth. If you recall it becomes all... slicey.

I am under the impression that this is an unhealed piece of strep skin causing a blockage in my throat every time I close my mouth.

Really truly search people. Your mouth feels normal to you because you've accepted it as your mouth. I think THIS is the imperfection we are looking for.

Tons of love guys!
Keep posting!

Over the years i have come to believe that my sensory feelings are more related to autistic tendancies, and that ocd is another "feeling" related to autism, for me at least. I "tic" quite a lot, but i'm mostly able to suppress the tics. I wish there was a 'wikiocd' or some such place that made sense of my mind.

Hi Canary
Welcome to the forum from me too. I have contamination OCD, not pure-O, and some time ago I suggested on this forum that there might be a relationship with the sense of touch so I think it is really important to think out of the box and I would certainly not dismiss what you suggest. I don't personally have any imperfections in my mouth and throat area, or certainly not those which you mention but when I force myself to do exposure by touching things and not washing my hands they can feel almost as though they are on fire and others with contamination OCD at our support group have expressed similar feelings. I personally suspect our senses are somehow tied in to our OCD but the mechanism is not yet understood. This could go some way to explaining the differences between various forms of OCD so I will be most interested to hear the results of your work. I like the way you say you plan on getting to the bottom of it because we, the sufferers now have the opportunity via the internet to really investigate our disorder and maybe come up with some revolutionary conclusions.

Hi there...
Thanks for the welcome.
I'm just working on a simple theory of thinking there is an underlying physical thing that is bothering the brain and it's trying to stop it. I decided to not blame my brain long ago. It's my own personal theory and I plan on getting to the bottom of this. I am very convinced. I would really appreciate hearing what others might think. I think a comparison between ocd mouths and throats and non would be very helpful.
