Hi ocd_mum,

I'm not a professional but from what you've written I'd say that he needs to see his doctor regarding his medication as the higher dose was actually reducing the thoughts and wasn't actually causing any problems.

It can't be easy seeing your child go through such problems but there are things that you can do to help.
Have you read Supporting a person with OCD it gives advice on what to do.
Also ask if you can attend one of his CBT sessions so that with the therapist you and your son can work out a plan of action so that you're all singing from the same hymn sheet.

The more you reassure someone with OCD the more reassurance they will seek (I speak from personal experience - I was the Queen of reassurance seeking <img src="http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_confused.gif" title=":?" class="bb_smilies" /> ) instead offer encouragement especially when he manages to resist his OCD.

Hi, my son is 18yrs old and was diagnosed with OCD 18months ago. He started with inappropriate sexual thought and through stuff I researched and medication of fluoxetine 60mg these thought reduced and was not causing him a problem ( even though it was very hard in the beginning). However, his medication has now been reduced to 20mg over a period of 6 months and it is absolutely horrific! He is going mad with his OCD and obbession of germs. Over the last few wks it has got progressively worse. Before he goes out at a weekend he is constantly asking for reassurance (for about 2 and a half hours) that if someone talks to him does he not have to wash. Or if someone shakes his hand does he not have to wash but this goes on and on. On Saturday night he met up with his girlfriend and she said all the time her friend was speaking to him he was Turning away and spitting ( to get rid of the germs) She said he was really bad. He also get very frustrated an angry with his obbessions. He has a cbt appointment next wednesday but do you think he needs to also increase his medication also? We are really all at our wits end and don't know how to help!! We try to encourage him to not go drinking at wkend but he just goes out anyway but this makes him very low on a Sunday because he's drank on a Saturday night

Any advice would be great took onboard.
Thanks

I could very well do with support from others and supporting them back. I work full time and as a result I do not get a chance to get to carer support group sessions here in Oxford. I am so frustrated with my partner's condition of BDD because I can't seem to help him and at the moment professional help is still some way off.

Hi Jeanette,

It's probably the OCD, she's had it for so long and probably can't remember a life without it. She's not really known anything other than living with OCD and so is possibly frightened of what to her is the unknown. She really should be getting CBT to help her through this. Go to the Resource Centre and have a look at the NICE Guidelines. This outlines what treatment she should be getting.
You can also call the OCD Action Helpline 0845 390 6362 for advice as to how to proceed if you're having difficulty accessing treatment for her.

Have you signed up for the OCD Parents' Support Project? It's an online support group complete with online seminars for parents whose children have OCD.

She could be saying this because 1) she really does feel that she won't be special anymore, or 2) because this is some sort of compulsion where she's afraid of being without OCD. Either way, these are both bad reasons to stop taking medication. If she is doing really well and the doctor feels that she may not need the medications, especially if there are bad side effects, that would be the only reason to stop taking them. Even in that case I would be extremely hesitant to stop the medications, because OCD is a chronic condition that she will most likely have for the rest of her life, and if something causes her to have a bad spike in anxiety at any time in the future, being on the medication will help prevent it from being even worse.

I don’t know, Dippy. I’ve known people to be afraid of losing the ability to ‘see’ harm etc, but not want to cling on to their obsessions for the reason your daughter is giving - not being special any more.

i feel absolutely useless at the moment my daughter is 12 had ocd since she was about 4 had first lot of cbt at 7 it did help for a while now its a different story shannagh is now on medication started about 5 weeks ago. just finished another lot of cbt if you could call it that, no consistency whatsoever breaks of 6 weeks 3weeks 2 weeks and now the councellor has gone on maternity leave! we are left with nothing but we are seeing the psyhchiatrist in 5 weeks to check on meds.last night shannagh was crying because she says she knows that i wont be allowed to touch her soon, and she doesnt want it to happen it makes her feel so bad. i dont know what to do the ocd just keeps on escalating her rituals more complex, and she asks me when will the medication start working, she really needs a councellor to help her through this but when i asked the psychiatrist was very reluctant. so it looks like we are dumped. its my fault for accepting a trainee councellor for quickness. there was no connection with her and shannagh.anyone got any suggestions. thanks

I posted the link before seeing your latest message. It does seem likely that the decrease in medication is to blame, at least it won’t have helped. This has happened to several people I know and some psychiatrists view medication as a long-term treatment. One friend has been told to see herself like a diabetic who requires insulin. She is keen to discontinue her medication but has been advised to remain on it for life. When she did stop her Prozac she relapsed and has now decided to take her psychiatrist’s advice.

P.S. I’m not sure saying ‘nothing bad will happen’ is the right approach, because your son is intelligent enough to know that something bad could happen. I think a better approach is accepting the risks and also emphasising that we need to encounter germs to build up immunity (which I realise you are saying). We can never avoid all germs and by attempting to do so, it’s more likely a serious one will eventually lay us very low. In many ways, our best form of defence is to build up a healthy immune system, by encountering various germs.

Of course, your son probably knows this and it will take exposure to help reinforce such knowledge.

David Veale and Rob Willson’s book Overcoming Obsessive Compulsive Disorder covers this as well as most other symptoms. It sounds as though the germ obsession has taken hold quickly and escalated into a serious problem for your son. I would recommend trying to get an urgent appointment with his psychiatrist, maybe an increase in medication would be suggested.

Hi really sorry but i only seem to come on here when there is a problem, (but your all so good at advice!!) Anyway my son was diagnosed with ocd (bad thoughts) in September 2010, however after taking fluxotine 60mgs and cbt when was improving massivley and now we all know how to challenge the 'bad thoughts'. His pyschiatrist reduced his medication (he is now on 20mg)and everything was great UNTIL 'the germs' came along! He is having massive problems with 'germs' he seems to be worse at the weekend and on a night out he has told me he can wash his hands upto 100 times (just incase any germs have gone onto his hands), this is now causing his hand to be red raw, chapped and sore he constanley washes his face also. He gets really angry if anyone coughs or sneezes near him, and finds it impossible to chat with someone (who looks dirty) incase their germs get onto him. He is also convinced that if he eats out the food he is eating is not cooked properly and therefore he will become ill and most of the time can not relax until he has made himself sick. I have tried to explain to him that everyone needs germs and nothing bad will happen even if someone coughs or sneezes near him. He has also been referred for further cbt treatment but i was just wondering if there is anything i can do or say to help him in the short term until his appointments come through (approx 4-6wks). I have read all the books recommended to me from this forum 'imp of the mind' etc which has help myself and my son massively with his ocd thoughts but i just cant seem to find anything regarding hand washing and germs.

thank you all soo much

OCD is one of the hardest and toughest things to go through both as an individual and as family/friend/carer. I know when you're going through it you don't ever think it will get easier, but I promise you it does.

On Saturday 18th February, we’re teaming up with Maudsley Hospital to run a whole day event for young people with OCD and their parents. We'll be kicking off at 10 am with some ice-breaker activities, followed by a group sessions for young people and parents. Then, after a buffet lunch at 12:30, we’ll be getting everyone together for a drumming extravaganza!

The event is totally free, as the City Bridge Trust is funding the event as part of our OCD at School project, so there’s no excuse not to come along! You just need to book your place by calling Trish on 0207 253 5272 or by emailing trish@ocdaction.org.uk, and then get yourself down to Friends House in Euston on the 18th.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Hi worriedmum64!

Sorry to hear about the problems your daughter is going through. It is very important that you support her. My wife was diagnosed with OCD and we've been struggling with this ever since. I actually wanted to give you some advice: be careful with the medication your daughter is taking especially if she's pregnant. It can be damaging to her baby! My wife and I had to go through an antidepressant birth defect lawsuit because of it and I wouldn't wish that on anybody. Take care of you and your daughter!

Hi there, as in PM, hopefully there will be someone on the teenagers forum, and also parents/carers forum who can identify with this... It is vital that you take your daughters fears seriously, and that you support her as best you can as her carers... Hopefully this will pass...

Just bear in mind hearing voices doesn't necessarily mean there's anything worse the matter, though of course you should get it looked into. A lot of people hear voices without anything else being wrong with them. Not many people know that. ("Hearing Voices Network" have some information about this.)

I wonder if she's tried just asking them politely what they want, or to stop talking and let her sleep? You never know.

Hi Worried mum, I've not come across this before myself, but it certainly needs to be checked out... A GP may be able to shed light on what is happening here... This certainly needs taking seriously, so get GP on side asap... This could seriously affect your daughters ability to concentrate on her studies at school because of her sleep disruption... Another thought, has she tried sleeping in another room? Children are very receptive to things we just don't fully understand, and it maybe that a change of room to sleep in might be a good idea... Hope this helps a bit...

Hi worried mum.
Many years ago I was in hospital with another lady who had OCD and as a child she used to see people in the night who spoke to her and she called them her misty people. Her mother used to get angry with her when she talked about them and tell her she was imagining it but unlike your daughter she regarded them as her friends. Even as an adult she remembered them with fondness.
