Hi everyone,

My name's Steve and I'm one of the volunteers at OCD Action. Joel has asked me to help out with our OCD Awareness Week -- which is coming up soon. (Monday 20 February to Sunday 26 February 2012.)

Would you like to get involved in OCD Awareness Week in some way? Have you got any ideas about any activities and events that we could run? Would you be willing to put up some OCD Action posters in your local area, or put out some OCD Action business cards in your local libaries, or supermarkets, or community centres, or GP surgeries? Would you like to hold an awareness raising event of your own?

OCD Action would love to hear from you.

You can call OCD Action on tel: 020 7253 5272.

You can email us at: media@ocdaction.org.uk

Here's the link for further information about our OCD Awareness Week:

http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/articles/ocd-week-2012/

You can also send a message to my profile, if you want to ask me any questions about Awareness Week. I'm an OCD sufferer and a volunteer for the charity.

No contribution to OCD Awareness Week will be too big or too small. This Awareness Week will be all about getting our messages out to the general public, and raising awareness about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The more people that get involved and help to get our messages out, the more people we can reach.

So please feel free to start contacting the team as OCD Action to tell us how you'd like to get involved.

Thanks for all your help.

Hi Mike
Thanks for these links. I've managed to read the two newspaper ones and they are excellent and tell it just like it is without senstionalism, but I'm struggling with the TV one, just getting commercials - is there an easy way of getting straight into the OCD bit?

Hi guys - Mike here.

We've done a bit of media analysis and fancy that in the year to now, through the media work, we may have reached up to around 8.5 million people with stories about OCD. That works out to about 13.5% of the UK.

Top effort so far, but still plenty to get done.

OCD Week was incredibly successful this year so thanks to everyone who got involved in raising awareness.

Thanks for the links Trudy and thanks for the media info Joel. I feel really encouraged by so much information pouring out of the media and for the first time since I developed OCD 43 years ago I am really starting to feel that the message is getting out to the public in an informed way, so a huge thank you to everyone who is working so hard to make this happen.

Thank you all. Just to keep you up to date, so far we have done

This Morning - ITV
ITV News - Central
ITV News - West Country
BBC Radio 5 Live
BBC Radio Manchester
BBC Radio West Midlands
BBC Radio Norfolk
BBC Radio Solent
Wolverhampton City Radio
CFM Radio Cumbria
The Independent Newspaper
The Oxford Mail
The Oxford Times
The Croydon Guardian

It is all thanks to our army of "case studies" who have been incredibly brave and happy to share their story with others. There is lots more planned for the rest of the week and I will keep you posted.

I realise that it would be nice to have pre-warning of media work, and some people have asked for this. Unfortunately the way that the media sometimes operates means that we need to keep cards close to our chest so that we are free to negotiate with different people.

Hi Tess,
I agree it would be nice if we knew about the media coverage in advance so that we don't miss it.
I looked at the link that you gave and found not only was there the interview that you mentioned you can go to it direct at the following link http://www.itv.com/westcountry-west/ocd-awareness-week87914/ but there's also an interview by Joel Rose the Director of OCD Action at http://www.itv.com/westcountry-west/extd-ocd-interview79612/ both interviews are worth watching.

One of the members of our support group has just been on ITV local news this evening talking about his OCD. You can view it on http://www.itv.com/westcountry and click on the Plymouth link. I've also ben told there was an article in today's Daily Mail.
Does anyone have details of other programmes and newspaper articles coming up this week please, it's so much nicer seeing them first hand.

I take part in the cancer research race for life every year. Is there any way that something like that could be organised for ocd? It would certainly bring it out in the open.

My GP surgery prefers to keep up there rather boring picture of a tree rather than some colourful and informative info posters on OCD, I have created 11 for ocd week coming up for showcase.

my GP tho is a good supporter of my work and ideas and has a number of OCD action info cards on hand. but Overall, there does not seem to be anything out thats says.....HEY! as mentioned in posts above.

A year or so ago I volunteered to be an Awareness champion for OCD Action and Jyothi sent me loads of super information - at considerable expense to the charity and I set about taking it round the GP surgeries. I must have been to about 30 surgeries across east, north and mid Cornwall, most times I stood in a queue at reception then when I handed over the literature I felt as though I was being treated like an unwanted drugs rep and I was told it would have to be considered by the Practice Manager. Having OCD myself and being overly sensitive I found the attitude I encountered quite upsetting. I went back to several of the surgeries at a later date and guess what - no posters had been displayed at any of them and the excellent literature I had handed over was nowhere to be seen. I even tackled my own GP at a routine appointment for repeat meds, told him I had been very disappointed that the poster was not up and he assured me he would raise it at the next practice meeting and get it put up - and guess what, it never got put up. But - I had a vastly different response when I went round the schools, they took the literature as though it was something precious, thanked me and put the posters up before I left.
This is of even greater concern now there are government plans to make GPs responsible for funding mental health services. The boards at the GP practices are overflowing with literature on obscure physical complaints but mental health, as you say, is swept under the carpet.
But I am optimistic that times will have to change because people like us with mental health problems are starting to get a combined voice, previously it was just one person and a psychiatrist and no-one realised just how many other people were experiencing the same problems, a mere facial expression by the psychiatrist could leave us feeling alone in the world, something alien and different. But now we have more power to change things and we must battle on in the struggle for a fair deal for mental health.

Therefore it's up to us to get OCD Awareness up on their boards to prevent it continuing to be swept under the carpet. Not good if you've got contamination OCD trying to sweep anything under the carpet <img src="http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/forums/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_confused.gif" title=":?" class="bb_smilies" />

It bugs me that around colleges, doc surgeries etc there are a wealth of posters for all sorts of things but nothing at all raising awareness of OCD. Not a sausage. Not even a chippolatta sausage!

For a condition that has been listed as being in the top ten most disabling "mental" disorders, it is swept right under the preverbial carpet.

Hi guys - I'm Mike and I'm volunteering as the media/press officer at the moment.

Super idea this. Definitely something that's worked for other campaigns in the past.

I had a couple more thoughts (some substantially worse than others!):
1) Any stories on mental health in the media, log on and leave a comment on the website if you can, linking back to the website here and making your point on OCD.
2) Radio phone-ins, competitions etc. - get a mention of your experience or the event in your area. Additionally, submitting that information via the website contact forms on the stations' websites may gather more interest
3) Spread the word of OCD among friends directly - get talking, see if you can challenge the 'everyone's a bit OCD' concept

What do you think, guys? Should I stick to just the media rather than the campaigning?! (I have written to Google requesting they change their artwork to reflect the colours of OCD Action on Monday 7th February. Watch this space...)

Mike

This year OCD Week is February 7th to February 13th and as you are all probably aware this year this focus of OCD Week will be on raising awareness of OCD amongst the general public.

Last year during OCD week OCD Action supported 20 local awareness events up and down the country and this year they are hoping to double that. If you think that you can help by arranging a local awareness event, it doesn’t matter how big or small you can contact the office using the following link http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/articles/ocd-week-2011-get-involved/

OCD Action provides help and support to many with OCD and unfortunately it costs money to run especially invaluable projects such as the Help Line. So would you be able to help raise funds by organising a fund raising event? If so go to the above link to contact the office.

However I’m aware that many of us because of our OCD couldn’t manage either of the above and might feel left out. But we can all play our part in this year’s OCD week.

Personally I’m not up to holding an event this year but hope to find someone that will do one with me next year. I'm already planning it. This year I’m not going to be left out and so I’m going to try and help raise awareness by ensuring that as many local surgeries, hospitals (including some of the larger ones) and of course the CMHT have an OCD Action poster displayed. I’m also going to ask some of the local supermarkets etc if they would display a poster for OCD Week.

So what can we as forum members do to help raise awareness for OCD Week?

Some suggestions:

We could all try to make at least two people aware of OCD.

Are you perhaps a member of another forum etc where you could let people know that it was OCD Week?

Does anyone else have ideas as to how we as forum members can help with OCD week either by promoting awareness or raising funds?

You can get more information on OCD week by clicking on the following link http://www.ocdaction.org.uk/articles/ocd-week-7th-february-13th-february-2011

and let's see what we as forum members can do to help.

Thanks

Trudy

I don't know what anyone else'll think on this idea, but seeing as OCD week's all about raising awareness of the condition, i think a facebook campaign would be quite effective, if we could get enough people to do it. I was thinking perhaps encouraging people to change their profile picture to that of a celebrity known to have OCD? such as Howard Hughes, Einstein, Michaelangelo, Darwin, Leonardo Dicaprio... the list goes on really. I'm not sure what anyones thoughts on it are, or alternative ideas?
