CBT varies as it's supposed to be tailored to the individuals needs and that means taking into account other medical conditions that could cause problems.

With regards to CBT therapists, Professor Paul Salkovskis said in his presentation at the 2010 OCD Action Conference:

"Ask what qualifications / experience they have but
Don't be impressed by titles
Ask about specific experience with your problem
Ask about their supervision

Trainees aren't necessarily a problem as they are
Less likely to be dogmatic
More likely to be "up to date"
More likely to be enthusiastic
More likely to have supervision "

For more information on CBT see the following in the Resource Centre:
Making CBT Work a presentation to download by Professor Paul Salkovskis
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
CBT Checklist

CBT can initially be stressful but as you progress the stress should slowly subside. You need to develop a good working relationship with your therapist so that you are able to work with them. CBT should be a collaboration between the therapist and the patient, they are there to guide, encourage and motivate you to help you to regain your life.

Has anyone on here had Cogetive Behaviour Therapy for their OCD? If yes how do they find it and what types of it can you get and is the therapy experience such as a senior Psychiatrist or senior Psychogist? I would prefer a senior rather than a trainee or a nurse or begginer as more experience they can help you better and they are more patient. Is CBT stressful?

Regards Jason

Hi

Looking forward to seeing members at tonights meeting. As discussed when we last met, we would like to know if any group members would be interested in stepping up and becoming a co-facilitator. It would mean becoming a volunteer with the organisation but it's a potentially very rewarding opportunity.
See you this evening - 7.00pm on Monday 5th March.

Hi Chrisu

Yes I thought there was one in Milton Keynes - I used to live there for about a yeear until last May actually but as I run the Central London (and other) groups I used to travel there, and I've moved back to London now. Pity I cannot help you in person with the new one - all the best with this it sounds good!

Hi Chrisu,

Great idea as more support groups are needed in all areas. The nearest one to Milton Keynes is in Northampton - maybe a bit too far away. Call OCD Action as they can give a lot of help and advice to anyone setting up a support group.

anyone interested in setting one up with me? I would also have the support and advise from my therapist (a great CBT-therapist), her waiting list on the NHS is 1 year!!! but we might be able to get her helping us in sessions at these support-group meetings too? anyone interested?

Hi Hoot,

Great initiative, more support groups are needed especially in your area. Have you contacted OCD Action who can offer help and advice when starting a group?
