Hi Chas, I don't normally come onto the this forum, but I was having trouble viewing the video stories, still am in fact... Anyway, I looked at the mirror article yesterday with thanks to Trudy's link, and it is brilliant, well done on sharing like that.. Really inspiring, and will also point people to help like OCD action, so a great big well done from me too...

Hi again Soxon, I've just tried to access the video stories from the main page, and I still get a blank white square where the video should be playing... Does it take a long time to load up? The link in your post above worked fine... Could it be something to do with cookies? I don't know what else to try, save leaving it for ten minutes or so and just see if they load up eventually... In fact I'll try that right now... Will let you know what happens...

Greetings London Lad,

Glad you found the forum helpful.

If you want to stay on the forum and raise people's awareness of OCD the best thing you can do is join OCD Action. It dosen't cost very much and it supports the work that the OCD Action team do behind the scenes as well as the stuff that you can see, i.e. the information on this website and the Advocacy Service where they help people with specific problems like housing and employment and the telephone helpline.

Hi everyone!
I'm new to the forum (hope i've posted in the right place), but I've greatly admired it for some time. I've been suffering from false memory again for the last 2 weeks. I had a massive episode of false memory OCD about 2 years ago, which lasted over 2 months- I recovered from it and I'm stronger for it! I very much believe that this present episode of OCD is going away and hopefully drawing to a close.

I wanted to say how comforting this forum is, to know there are other people with the same problem as me. Whenever I have a bad moment, I come on here immediatly and I don't worry about the intrusive thoughts meaning as much.

As I said before, I had a horrid time 2 years ago, from the end of Febuary - end of April, 2010. The most horrid time of my life, I didn't realise what it was until about 5 weeks into the problem, which is when I researched the condition and realized that it was OCD, by which point I had done all the wrong things, eg reassure seeking and going back into the past trying to work things out. I then went to my GP, who gave me fluoxetine. I took it for about 8 days, It made the symptoms so much worse, to the point where on a sunday afternoon, I thougth I had gone completely mad, and I thought that I was going to have to go to a mental hospital. It was this day, that I decided to stop taking the fluoxetine (not saying anyone should do this though!), and although that sunday proved to be the worst day of the ordeal, It also proved to be my best as the syptoms completely cleared up. The next week I had no intrusive thoughts, I felt very comfortable, It was pure ecstasy, and I was able to live life to the full again. proof that there IS life after OCD!!
I haven't really been troubled by it for 2 years. Unfortunately it has come back, this time the intrusive thoughts are no where near as bad. This time I decided to nip it in the bud, (without medication) but with CBT. I feel as if I'm on the mend, as I do have moments when I know, that I've nothing to worry about and that I haven't done anything wrong, even though the intrusive thoughts are still there, I just recognize them as ocd trying to create, or distort a memory.

I feel very lucky that this forum exists, and I do feel really really bad about not being on here when I was fully better. When I have recovered from this episode, I intend to stay on here and give support, and I really want to raise peoples awareness about OCD.

Thank you again everyone!
have a great day

It's become a very interesting discussion. I agree with Tess: people, esp. newbies, might be very wary of typing in the full word of that they are (or think they are) suffering from. There may be various reasons: a fear to be 'found out' by third parties, somehow; or feeling very guilty when typing the term.

Truddles' list points out the potential confusion very well.

I will ponder it a bit, and also see if, and what acronyms are agreed upon by professionals as some standard shorthand.

In the meantime, I propose the 'Chinese Restaurant' solution:

"Hey, fellow members, I have numbers 79 and 101, and also a bit of 69... what should I do?"

Hi everyone
Thanks for the list and the explanation Trudy. I'm relieved to learn there are no official acronyms which are used for the subgroups but we often get new members on here saying they've just been diagnosed with, for example, POCD or HOCD. This suggests to me that professionals are bandying these terms about to patients otherwise how would a newly diagnosed sufferer know the acronym. It has croseed my mind in the past that therapists might be using acronyms as a way of demonstrating their knowledge and expertise, in which case it needs to be made clear, not just to members of this forum but also across the board that this form of labelling OCD is confusing and unhelpful.

I agree with Truddles and Soxon. Further even when there is no ambiguity about a term such as depression there is ambiguity about its meaning. Because a mental problem such as depression can manifest itself in so many different ways. So an account of a person's experiences is necessary in order to understand and empathise. We have a vocabulary of terms which are distilled from a whole range of at times contradictory theories. I think a description of experiences always sends the clearest message.

There are no official acronyms for the subgroups of OCD, because acronyms aren’t supposed to be used by the medical profession because of the ambiguity and resulting confusion.

But I’ve seen people use the following -

COCD Checking / Contamination / Cleaning
HOCD Homosexual / Hoarding / Harming / Health
POCD Paedophilia / some even use it to mean Pure O
ROCD Responsibility / Relationship / Religion / Ruminating
SAD Seasonal Affective Disorder / Social Anxiety Disorder

ACT Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Hi again - just caught on, well a bit more anyway - SAD=Seasonal Affective Disorder/Social Anxiety Disorder?, R=Relationship/Religious?, H=Hoarding/Health?, C?=Checking/Cleaning. I think we could go through the alphabet here! There has to be a better way to define the different types of OCD, perhaps we should start using numbers as well!!

Hi, this is all a bit complicated for me too - I didn't realise that any of the acronyms listed have more than one meaning: To me H=Hoarding, P=Paedophile, R=Relationship, SAD=Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Would be most interested to see the other meanings.
Whilst I understand the sentiments behind Soxon's post I think it could be difficult in some circumstances for the OCD sufferer to actually type the offending word so maybe there could be a list of acronyms on the website to assist with possible confusion.
The other question that springs to mind is do we need acronyms anyway? Is this an unnecessary addition to psychiatric practice which is expanding with no corresponding reclassification of the different manifestations of OCD?

Good instructions, Soxon, thank you for the heads up on this. It is tempting to use such abbreviations/acronyms by way of shorthand (one gets overfamiliar with them over time); and especially for new members we should remind ourselves of your advice from time to time.

Please do not use acronyms on the forum unless you explain what you mean when you first use the acronym in your post or thread.

If you don’t explain the acronym that you use it can cause confusion when others reply to your post. Some of the acronyms such as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and CSP (Compulsive Skin Picking) are self explanatory given that these are OCD forums. The others such as HOCD, POCD, ROCD, SAD confusingly have more than one meaning, so please explain what you mean when using these acronyms.

We also need to remember that newer members might not know what they mean.

It's a good insight for people who don't know much about OCD, and hopefully will offer some courage to those who have the symptoms but don't know where to start in terms of getting help. To also know that you guys are compassionate and understanding because you know what OCD is like really means a lot too

Hi Chas
Wonderful stuff, well done, it really take courage to tell your story like that. I would have liked to have read a bit more about your journey into recovery as I think the newspapers dwell too much on the bad part of the story whereas sufferers above all need to know about recovery.

Hi chas,

Well done

I can't get out to buy a paper but have read it on line (probably longer than the article in the paper) http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/real-life-stories/ocd-nightmare-mum-hid-knives-775074

It will certainly help to raise awareness, hopefully it will make people realise that OCD isn't just checking and washing hands and that if you have OCD you don't have to suffer in silence.
